Pretty interesting (and terrifying) read, though mostly illuminates the problems rather than offers a coherent solution. Personally keeping the BBC roughly the way it is (it pisses off both the right and the left...) is probably the best fudge we have.

But I watch quite a few of Tim Pool's videos on Youtube and he explains how mainstream journalism works on there. As far as I can tell the BBC commissions no fictional programmees that doesn't reinforce a 'progressive' perspective.....I wouldn't call what they do 'liberal' or balanced. After all, change is constant. But paint a picture too absurd and you're likely to have the opposite from intended effect. I am not generally convinced that the BBC is agenda-driven. I think it's driven by public service ideas on broadcasting, some popular entertainment and attempting to be impartial in political discussions. I think the intent is not malign, essentially. That doesn't mean that the implementation is blemish free by any stretch. But look at things like Blue Planet and Louis Theroux, look at the news and the comparison to pretty much any other broadcaster on the planet is off the charts. The BBC, like the NHS, is an institution the country should be proud of.

The head of MI5 said they’ve arrested 400 people involved in terrorist activity this year. They foiled 9 major terrorist attacks (2 were biggest attacks uk would have seen). They’re got a list of 3000 people who have been reported to them that have terrorist sympathies... of these... 500 are being watched.

I don't really have a problem with this in theory, provided their is sufficient oversight, except in terms of the practical - How do you determine if someone was actually fighting for IS. Because otherwise you're going to end up with extra-judicial executions, of British Citizens, by the state without any kind of due process - based on questionable intelligence sources and sooner or later you're going to end up killing the wrong person.

Sadly we killed loads of the 'Wrong people' during WW2 and other conflicts for the greater good. Protecting the innocent ain't always pretty.

What I find odd, is how this is so unacceptable - We kind of declared war on IS, and spent the last couple of years throwing missiles and bombs at them, including their leadership. Yet, when people allied to them target our Prime Minister (rather than civilians say at a concert) its a special kind of wrong. Seems like fair game in a war.
