Not in it's meaning. Absurd has a a much more nuanced meaning than wrong. Likewise with intellectual and "very intelligent". To believe something is very different to believing in it. Put together the meaning of the two phrases is totally different. In his Notes on Nationalism, Orwell says: “One has to belong to the intelligentsia to believe things like that: no ordinary man could be such a fool”. Sums you up well I think.

Convictions and a decrease in the crime rates are the desired outcomes. Convictions demand evidence. You need public support to gain the evidence.
