That is your opinion but I think the average person would be blind not to see poverty is alive and (un)well in the UK. My point is Rees-Mogg and many MP's simply do not know how bad it is for some people as they live in a totally different environment from where the poverty is. That isn't just Tories. The state is responsible for a safety net with minimum standards for those responsible enough to use that help responsibility. That state is not responsible for sorting out problems in an individual's life. Those who push cradle to grave expectations onto the state and then demonise that state are people with their heads stuck firmly.....up their cuckoo land. We have too many people in this country...our infrastructure hasn't coped for many years.....that explains some of these problems. Edited by Stirlingsays (03 Feb 2018 6.34pm)

With regards poverty, it is relative. Benefits are paid to people via £500 smartphones. Go to Africa or India, see people living by open sewers, missing limbs and then me we have poverty.

That's why I said it was not absolute poverty except in some cases. Children are still going hungry in this country. Pensioners are still suffering freezing conditions. The pensions pensioners receive here is also high compared to most countries in the world. You can be as disappointed as you like. Your criticisms are head in the clouds stuff. No taxpayer is responsible for another's lifestyle outside of a safety net. They should be looking after their own family.....I would add to this though that this should also include being responsible for their own familiy's elderly....because I regard too many of them as palming off responsibility that traditionally fell to families to the state......which is essentially the taxpayer. The state should be looking to ensure there is equality of opportunity and a decent safety net for those who aren't capable.....a safety net, not a lifestyle. It is the responsibility of the individual to sort their own life out. It is the responsibility of the state to provide an environment that enables them to do so. If people make bad choices that's their fault...but we have a safety net...it is not the fault of those that were lucky or made good choices. That's it.

The median low end includes people whose only income is benefits, and the top end includes income, but not wealth. The raw data is adjusted to allow for incompleteness and not regional. So have never been convinced that below this number you're living in poverty and above you're not.
