He's still the one signing the cheques.

Parish may be cautious, but I'd rather that than the absolute disaster that has been Stoke's transfer dealings in the last two and a half years.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

The spanner in the works this summer will be the World Cup, making it near impossible to sign quality players early in the summer. Agents will all be hoping that their players will have decent performances in the WC to bump up their value. A lot of World Cup players will have a couple of week's holiday afterwards so they'll be hard to pin down for contracts. So it'll still all end up being business done very late July/early August so us fans will need to have patience but hopefully it's not because it's CPFC dicking about, rather the agents.

This is possible of course but we will see what we do and our competitors manage to do. We did of course manage to tie down a keeper (although we dont know if he's trying to duck out of the deal) and we had Adamou willing to sign in January when we weren't as strong on the field as we are now.

One thing for certain is that Wilf isn't at the WC so that pretty much removes that large piece of uncertainty.

As we're possibly trying to slightly lower the average wage bill it'll be interesting if we actually go for WC players whose value may rise during the WC.

I never get worked up in the summer window until about 2 weeks before the season starts anyway. The club should be on it by then with everything ready or about to be in place/agreed by about then.

Selling Arnautovic and not really replacing him was a huge error. Probably more Hughes that Stoke's fault in him leaving going by his West Ham goal celebrations in front of Hughes. (I don't know the details)

I have heard this argument advanced, however he only scored 6 PL goals for Stoke last season so he was hardly prolific but I accept that on his day he can perform with some aplomb and at Stoke he rarely,if ever, played as an out-and-out striker.Trouble is that you never know what sort of performance he will produce as he is a player who blows hot and cold.

I love your optimism and hope you're right

But with Arnautovic on one side/wing and Shaqiri on the other and then losing one and not replacing is going to be damaging.

Yes I understand the argument you have advanced.

In general Stoke's transfer activity in the summer was abject and this was probably the prime reason they were relegated.
I am informed that they paid some £52 Mill in transfers and recouped about £30 Mill, most of which was from the Arnautovic sale.Berahino was bought before but has proved a disastrous purchase at £12 Mill rising to £15 Mill.

Similar with Southampton making a profit.

I assume that you are being deliberately obtuse

EDIT - I had always assumed that it was Pardew's fault that we wasted all that money on Jordon Mutch but according to your logic it must have been Parish's fault as he signed the cheque

How do you know he doesn’t interfere, I have heard him on the radio discussing transfers. It’s his fault he employed Hughes after his record at QPR buying old hasbeens on big wages.

But, they did replace Arnautovic with players that weren’t any good. Selling Jonathan Walters was a mistake they must now regret.

I agree with most of this except the opening statement.

I am sure there are better out there but who? Coates at Stoke, long lauded now after selling out a target of abuse. jenkins at Swansea, the saviour of the club took them from the bottom league to Europe sold out now a pariah. Same for Peace at West Brom.

Parish makes mistakes, some avoidable some only apparent with the benefitof hindsight. As long as he learns from them, which when you look at FdB going it looks like he has, then we will be fine.

SP should be criticised at times, but there does sometimes seem that a vocal minority don't expect him to make any mistakes at all.

I am very happy with Parish but he knows he needs to improve and one reason might be is that rather than being better than Coates, Peace or Jenkins is that he is in an identical position to them in terms of unfashionable clubs having an extended stay in the premier league.

It's just that this year their luck ran out and Parish's luck held. The fact that he earned his luck by ditching FDB and hiring Roy when nearly all thought him mad to do so is all credit to him.

Like them he has maxed out on wages and reluctant to put in large amounts of his personal fortune to try and guarantee safety with more and more signings. One year you are going to pick the wrong players or make bad managerial selections (or both) and you are gone.

This year is special because he has a big proportion of the less important players for the future coming to the end of their contract. No criticism of their contribution to the club in the past - eg Ward, Cabaye but their careers are on the wane - so that is an opportunity for him to get them on lower wages as squad players or replace them with better players on lower salaries. That is Dougie's job if you are wondering what he is supposed to be doing.

What will keep us in the Premier League until the new stand is built, after which we will have extra income to give us breathing space, is excellence in recruitment. That is not easy but our squad management has been non-existent since we reached the Premier League and that is what needs to improve. Happy that Parish is the guy to try and make it happen.
