Being an avid supporter since the 60s, I have experienced the 'Snakes and ladders', the sunshine and showers, the peaks and troughs, the 6000 gates and several moments of abject despair with hyperventilation and steam coming out of ears common occurrences.

Avid readers of HOL will be fully aware of some of my negativity and doom-laden prognostications about our prospects but this should not be taken as any sign that my enthusiasm has diminished by current difficulties.

Throughout all the disappointments my enthusiasm for the team has never waned with victory celebrated with some gusto and I shall continue to support the team with my customary vim and vigour until I have taken my last breath.

I start from a different perspective to later attitudes about palace in the sense that I have no sense of entitlement about our status. Seeking re-election was the norm.

The euphoria about our first promotion to the old first division some 49 years ago was incredible because of our lack of success in previous years and apart from a brief spell under Big Mal ind the 3rd division we have turned our team into essentially a championship and lower premier team.

I have as I expect many of you have encountered moaners at the Palace, perhaps because they do not have a cat on which to take out their frustrations or a wife at home who tells them what to do, most of them return each week for their moan or pure joy. Nothing at all to do with new stands or league status it is only about the team.

The current frustration about the club is because many could see even before the season had started that with the loss of RLC and YC we had taken a backward step and once again we had failed to address the striker issue.

It takes a few years for most teams to establish a position in this league so stay with the dreams rather than frustration's, cheer the team and we may even turn over Arsenal on Saturday!!!

There are an awful lot of posts to this topic and plenty of reasonable explanations, and I think it comes down to entertainment, are we being entertained? We pay large amounts of money to follow the team home and away and at the moment we seem in a rut.

We need a lift and only the players performances can do this, the fans are doing their bit and get behind the team, but I feel some of the players are way off the pace at the moment. I am sure we will turn it around, but as it stands we have lost our way...

Peaks and troughs indeed.

I've seen us struggle through 10k attendences at the championship before the relative glory years we've been having recently.

That said, it does get frustrating. You look at the team and the money the spent - the opportunity more than anythng - of what we could achieve and the potential to improve.

CPFC have a failing transfer strategy, and that needs to be addressed first and foremost. We have wasted money on toilet signings and we need to begin to address what is going wrong there. Whether at board level, scouting, the managers, the brand.

Max Meyer isn't getting game time, and he was meant to be a marquee signing. It's clear Ayew is also a dud.

Our failure to recruit a striker is unfathomable.

And the idea of going to see us get battered 3 nil against Arsenal on Sunday does not excite me at all.

I thought it was obligatory that every Palace fan gets really pissed off at least once a year. Well almost as obligatory as it is that we have to have an annual relegation battle.

err, the Porsche was built on a Volkswagen chassis for many years.

Look, I get the analogy however there is no entitlement to be fighting for a top 6 or top 8 position in this league, or even to be in this league. We are a second tier side, simple as that and you can perm any 3 from 12/14 who might go down each year depending on who has a bad season out of that group.

Nothing has really changed in the last 20/30 years as far as I am concerned, as everyone just has more money. The top 6/top 8 still have proportionately more money than everyone else however. So all that has happened during those years is that the price of players has shot up in line with the increase in income. It is no more difficult or easier to buy a top player as a middling club now than it was in the past. Could we afford Trevor Francis when he went for £1m? No we couldn't, just like we can't afford Hazard, Messi, Ronaldo or any number of top players now.

We have certainly progressed as a club during that time however, although the real measure of that as far as I am concerned is:

1) whether we are solvent
2) how long we are in the top flight

On both of these measures we are having a rather successful spell so I for one am not going to complain.

Exactly this! If anything, with all the money coming in to the league it has become even harder to find players who are good enough.

One poster said above we are a championship/lower league prem club to which I completely disagree. We are a Premier League Club, the players we have now if in the Championship would win the league fairly comfortably - not that a lot of them would stick around if we were relegated.

First went to Selhurst 60 years ago this month. Am looking forward to driving up from the South Coast on Sunday as I always do.
Cannot believe the pessimistic comments I read. We’re in the premier league and have the best squad in all my years of supporting the club.
We’ll win on Sunday and as always all the moaners will suddenly be full of the joys of Spring.

I hope you are right. Plenty of people unhappy with how things are going, presently.

When I think of Palace this season or look at our players I just feel f***ed off. Not apathetic, angry that yet again we're being put through the miserable grind of a relegation battle with s***e football. Make me feel like a mug for gushing over them last season and saying how good they are and how we could get 50 pts and top 8 if lucky. TBH this s*** gets depressing and none of this "we were s*** 30 years ago so suck it up" will make me delude myself into thinking we'll be last season's Palace any time soon

it's a rotten cycle that only ends one way
