Someone told me today that there are basically two viruses going around. One has a much higher mortality rate as we are seeing in China (and perhaps Italy?) and one is a mutation of this that is much milder and more in line with a standard flu which seems to be what we have in the UK. This is from someone who is fairly obsessed with medical podcasts.

I also heard on fairly good authority (from someone who works in virology research) that you should not use alcohol based hand sanitizer as it removes the natural oils in your skin that protect from viruses - just wash your hands with soap and face masks are a total waste of time. They also said this situation is really nothing to worry about overall.

We'll see.

According to De Blasio NYCs Mayor this could hit the City for up to 6 months.
That said here is a guy who stops the subway when we get quarter inch of snow.
I've noticed increasingly over the years that these politicians & especially those of a Democratic persuasion who seem to relish in this sort of scenario & basically use it to 'Politick' (If that word exists?)

I hadn't heard that there are two strains of the virus but is seems to be true:-

However as the article points out that whilst this to be expected and that others will emerge it doesn't really make any difference as the effect will be identical. We will surely see both circulating here.

All the advice I have seen, including that in health care settings, says that alcohol based santisers are effective at killing viruses provided they contain a minimum of 60% alcohol. Washing with soap and water, where available, is said to be better. My wife though uses both!

I honestly didn't budget for a once a century plague 2 1/2 months into running my own B&B.
It has been a nightmare up until the point of opening, from arriving in -15° temperatures & it being -5° inside the house to using the electrics in the house for the first time switching on an electric radiator & the fuse box literally exploding on the side of the house, that was the end of the electrics for a while.
Basement flooding 3 times due prehistoric plumbing.
My van breaking down & having it crushed 1 hour outside of munich in the summer last year whilst driving the last of my possessions over from England, then being stranded for 3 days without a bierhaus in sight, I explained to the gf that if she's gonna rescue me she needs to hire a van as I have a van full of stuff only for her to arrive in a car with her mate next to her so no room in the car for me.
It was then 18 hours of trains & walking carrying a bike with no pedals (I'd packed them in the car by mistake) & a holdall full of stuff.
Being kicked off a train in Austria because I didn't buy my bike a train ticket.
s***ting in buckets for 6 months..
Took the best part of a year for the local council to approve the gas installation so improvised by boiling water on a 70yr old stove transferring hot water to a garden chemical sprayer & washing under that.
A f*** off big dead heron/crane that was nesting in our loft.
I honestly could write a book.

Yeah didn't expect this virus to stop us dead in our tracks 2 months in & I am absolutely convinced there is a cursed 120yr old gypsy buried under the house.

Agreed, along with the assets of those elderly.
The mother-in-law (76yrs old with dementia) is sitting in a property worth around £500k, her neighbour (90yrs old with dementia) is similar and our aunty Betty (90+yrs old with slight dementia) also has around £500k in value so a total between three little old ladies of around £1.5mil.
In effect, this 'money' is currently out of the system.

Have you offered them a way they can invest...

Joking joking

Any resemblance is entirely coincidental.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

A large appendage probably helped.
Political persuasion obviously not discussed yet

For some reason IPA is not sold here in retain packs in every supermarket as it is in the USA, although it is a widely used solvent in food ingredients. It is also the alcohol used in the hand sanitisers. I love using it myself and still have some "Equate" from Walmart.

Waste of gin - Angostura bitters solve that!

Hand sanitizer? I've just diluted some Dettol into a small travel spray bottle and use that with a tissue to dry after- seems it's as good as anything shop bought.

(also use it to clean supermarket trolley handles, door handles et al before using)
