Express report says that Gary Cahill is leaving Palace - is that for sure?

Hope so, to old and expects top wages. Andersen is his replacement.

Question you should ask yourself is would you take this guy over taking nobody? Because yes loan deals benefit the owner club but they also benefit the loaning club…that’s the way they are meant to work otherwise they wouldn’t exist.

We aren't choosing between Gallagher and nobody, we are choosing between Gallagher and what we already have.

What's more, with any loan the player arriving must only be compared exactly as he is right now to what we already have right now, and nothing more. A lot of what makes this player valuable is what he might grow to be, but that's of no value to us at all.

If Gallagher plays most games for us then someone we have already invested in has to sit out and get paid for not contributing, or a younger player has their development chances affected negatively, harming the value of our asset whilst Chelsea's improves.

Loans should be used as a last resort if we are desperately short in a position, or if the incoming player will make us noticeably better.

When we played WBA last year I didn't see in Gallagher a player who would have improved our side there and then - far from it in fact, I felt our old guard put the kid very firmly in his place.

If he is coming then of course I wish him all the best and hope he has a brilliant season, but unless he can single-handedly propel us into the posh end of Europe then I'm not sure what we will have gained from it all.

I don’t think that’s the argument the other posters are making. They are talking about the issue of loaning compared to a permanent signing…not a loan compared to playing our current crop.

Personally I think centre mid is our weak point and the reason why we conceded more than we have been used to last season. Luka is no longer up to the pace, McArthur is unlikely to play an entire season and Kouyate is limited although a player I do admire. Jairo I’m hoping gets a run of games this season but the jury is still out on him.

So I think we do need additional players in the centre mid position. If we can’t afford them then I’m happy to loan them. Like I said, I’d rather have them as an option than not.

This won't go down well but this isn't a particularly good signing for Palace.

What Palace have been crying out for in recent years is a number 8 style of midfielder in the Cabaye mould who can help us retain possession better. That becomes all the more vital in a Vieira system and whilst Gallagher is certainly a good young player, he hasn't demonstrated anything to suggest he is that type of player.

He's effectively another McCarthur. And he'll add something to our team. But that doesn't make it a good signing in the context of our squad.

Not making the direct comparison - some difference in quality - but the mid who will retain possession and recycle the ball is Jairo - by a distance the best mid we have on the ball imo.

Whether there is a system where we play Jairo and Gallagher together in complementary roles is another question.

possibly, but he has energy and is box to box, something none of our midfielders have.

He is still young and did ok in a struggling side last season (look at Maitland-Niles, he didn't pull up any trees at WBA despite on paper being a decent player). He has got better with every loan. If he keeps improving i think he will add value.

McCarthur and Schlupp don't have that? I think they do. I wouldn't be against Gallagher at all if it was on the premise that he comes in alongside another midfielder more of the mould that we require. I just highly doubt that'll be the case.

Finally, this is so correct in so many ways.

Who, fulfills & is available, I have no idea, our current crop of senior CM's is, tbf, old n slow with the exception of Jairo. Imho, as it stands, I dont think there is anyone from the youth sides ready or able to step up, yet.

I'm sorry, I like others, dont think, CG is the answer, if he is signed then will hope he does a better job with us, than he did with WBA, last season. It could be a race between him & Luka as to who gets the 1st red &/or to 5 yellows.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

I like this signing (I know it's not final till he's holding up a shirt).

He has looked good in spurts, and PV will hopefully know how to get the most out of him. I'd prefer a purchase, but I figure the kitty is getting low. So this is a decent move for this season, and we can address the continued need for a "new Cabaye" next year.

If we only have cash for one more signing, I prefer it's spent on a striker/winger.

I never really took too much notice of his performances for Baggies apart from scoring against us (naturally) but ive just watched a lengthy vid of his time with them and i think he will definitely enhance our team, bundles of energy and also puts himself about. He will be good for us.

I think that that Gallagher style lies between a Cabaye and McArthur. He probably has the pace of the former and the style of the latter. He'll learn to play to his strengths with experience. I see him as a playmaker who can ping from distance
