A difficulty with the argument of the Hodgson apologists is that their opinion that Hodgson is getting the best possible out of the available squad is stated as certain fact.
Nobody can say that for sure, and I would be interested to see what another manager would do with the squad.
Hodgson has kept us up - but so did Pulis, Pardew and Allardyce, so staying up in itself is not a notable achievement.
Perhaps a new manager would not persist with Luka and Townsend, would play Eze in his correct position and not allow us to be continually overrun in midfield.
Perhaps a new manager would not be accepting at 3-1 down to West Ham on 60 mins that the game was gone and be more concerned about the opponents ‘aggravating the score’ as Hodgson called it.
I doubt ‘Crystalbul’ would have happened under Hodgson.

A commendable post. I did imagine to myself, what if? What if Lampard were to become our manager next week? How would the team line up?

Yes he is working with an old squad but that means playing to your strengths. We are getting over-run every week and yet he puts out the same players and same formation and expects things to change.

I might be somewhat 'Off the mark' but I believe that the consensus of 'Roy In' faction is that he is having to work with an old squad, lacking in vigour, pace and energy and that the turgid football is a direct result of this fact.
They also see an experienced manager who despite hardly any outlay in the 'Transfer Window' has kept us in the PL and will do so yet again.

Wish someone powerful could inform him.

Some people seem to think you gain experience just by being around for a long time.

You gain experience through learning from situations.

Roy doesn't learn from situations. He is stubborn and just does the same thing over and over again no matter how incorrect he is.

It's a very bad trait.

It seems to be covered up by the fact his outgoing appearance is placid and non threatening. Which doesn't reflect his rigid, uncompromising approach to tactics.

It's Roy's way or the highway for our players, but he's too well media trained and disingenuous to openly state his own views in a interview. He just regurgitate clichés and leaves players out in the cold.

That's why people think he's a nice old chap. He's really a bit of a weasel. Would have made an excellent politician.

We’d be nailed on for relegation with this team and him in charge. He wouldn’t know where to start. I honestly believe Lampard will never be seen managing a team in a topleage ever again.

It was every bit as bad. It's just that neither of them stuck around long enough for anyone to get bored of them.

we did have a go at teams under them though. It wasn't always pretty but we tried to take the game to other teams, tried to score and win, and it was often exciting. We don't do that any more.

We used to sit back, but used to harass attacking players when they got in our half. There was always someone pressing the man on the ball which was enjoyable to watch.

No we just sit back a bit, then sit a bit deeper, then a bit deeper.

Brave, but I am glad you said it, at least I'm not the only one that thinks along these lines.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

We have not had a settled back four we have had issues in central defence with injuries and perhaps the need for extra protection for the last line has been required.
Furthermore our ageing players across the pitch have got that much older.

I always felt that physicality would be an issue this season with the fixture schedule and the limited time between seasons.

If Steve Parish and the Yanks were to say if we lose to Wolves Hodgson will be sacked how many posters, if any,
would be wanting us to lose?

My answer would be NO because I never have and never would want us to lose under any circumstances.

Under Pulis we defended from the front. Cameron Jerome pressed the opposition defenders in a way that Benteke never has.
