Benteke and Batshuayi may have been better appreciated in an earlier era when 4_4-2 was the norm ànd teams tried to get the ball to the strikers as quickly as possible.
In a similar vein to the way we used to utilise Bright and Wright.
Occasionally I used to visit the old training ground at Mitcham and many of the drills were exclusively on providing crosses to them.
You may remember Neil Redfearn who was a decent footballer with a very good shot.
I once asked him why he didn't have more shots on goal. He said he wasn't allowed as he was instructed to always hit Bright and Wright when in an attacking position.
The build up is much slower now and strikers are expected to be the first line of defence.

Perhaps we should try 4-2-4 and play long ball

Yes, you're right, RLC is the type of player I had in mind, that seems like an age ago now. He was injured for a fair few games if I recall.
I was hoping Kouyate might be able to do a Viera and fulfil that role but alas no.

Trouble is Kouyate hasnt been able to do that due to been used as a CB, especially end of last season & all this.

Kouyate has lots of energy and zip...but has the control of a donkey and zero vision. CB is his future, I reckon.

If we had an attacking midfielder he'd be so busy tracking back it would be pointless. Even Eze and Wlif have to constantly track back. Eze let it slip in an interview which was then backed up by Roy. You really couldn't make this up. Think of the attacking midfielders we have or have had since Roy (I'm trying to forget). What happened to them?

Only if that is what the system is setup to do.

Wilf doesn't track back at all hes very lazy now watch him spends more time walking around and when you do see him back their its due to reasons like defending a corner etc.

This is Roy system it isn't a bad system if you are playing against big teams away but for everyone else its terrible which is why you keep seeing our home form plus the teams below mid table we don't look great against. (top managers adapt Roy has never been able to do this he got away with it in the past because of the talent he had but even then that can only take you so far)

Look at his record it sums him up same pattern smaller teams he doesn't know how to play against.

If teams score first or it's nil nil and they put 8 back and defend, we never break them down. We don't care about set pieces so that won't work. We aren't direct, or quick so we can't go over the top, and we lack creativity, in a system that doesn't seem to reward creative players. So you seem largely correct.
When people attack us though, we can counter - largely through Wilf and PVA. Leading us to the results we've had. It's the reason we can't win without Wilf. I guess a case could be made to push PVA up the field, in the absence of Zaha. He seems a winger more than inside forward though, which is probably why we won't do it. Never err from the system.
