I would historically have said Young's but it's been ruined in recent years.

That is a vaccine, right? It's just one that needs multiple doses

What did they do to Young's?

Turned Special into pish

First, they reduced its ABV back in the 1990s

Then they moved the brewing out of the Ram brewery and into Charles Wells' Eagle brewery in Bedford

Then Wells sold up to Marstons

So, bit by bit, the extremely special Special became a pale reflection of its former self, barely worth a second sip.

I talked with Duncan Sambrook to try to encourage him to brew a 'heritage' Special now they have moved into the Ram brewery, fingers crossed.

Maple tree speaks the truth, Young’s special is sadly awful now, I’d rather a seafarers or ESB now, shame

Yup

I rarely drank it but nevertheless now realise Eaglecoops is a kindred spirit

And talking of occasional brews, I was always partial to Mr Harry when the boys from Chiswick got bored.

Not for the faint of heart. 3 pints at lunchtime meant a late afternoon snooze guaranteed. The Morpeth Arms on the embankment down from Vauxhall Bridge, my boozer of choice for 9 years in the late 80s through the 90’s.

Good for you, well done on being macho.

Has it occurred to you that viruses are very good at multiplying. When they multiply they mutate. And then life is like a box of chocolates.

In whom will these mutations happen do you suppose?

What gives you this idea? Viruses adapt rather than "mutate". Make a vaccine, it adapts. Deny it access, it adapts. Evolution 101. The word 'mutate'/'mutant' is pure scare factor.

They ruined Youngs Ornery as well, which was a great session beer. When brewing moved to Bedford, some marketing guru must have decided that you can't sell a beer labelled 'Ordinary' and the name changed to just Youngs bitter. it also tasted suspiciously like Wells Fargo and I think was discontinued very quickly.

My 'locals w'ere the the Pied Bull , the Gloucester or The Gorringe and in town The East India Arms or The Lamb.

For most viruses, replication involves making many errors. This means that viruses like the flu mutate rapidly. This can mean that many treatments and vaccines become ineffective, and is one of the reasons why we need a new flu jab every year.

However, coronaviruses proofread their replicated genome and so they accumulate mutations at a slower rate. Mutations do occur, though, and could have many different effects on the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and our ability to control the pandemic.

The majority of mutations will have no impact on the virus or on the disease. Occasionally a mutation will enable greater growth, transmissibility or escape from the immune system, in which case the mutated virus may spread widely throughout the population.

The only adaptation undertaken by viruses to my knowledge is that they can switch from the lytic phase to the lysogenic phase and back again.
