A friend is a social anthropologist and published writer. She spent a year in a school in Bermondsey and wrote a book about it. She was mainly focusing on why white working class kids do so badly.

In the book it is quite clear that the only person holding the school together is the Deputy Head so when she goes on long term sick leave the whole place falls apart as the Head is useless and none of the other teachers want to step up.

As soon as the DH came back things settled down again.

Many such cases.

Poor pupil behaviour or why teachers leave?

Sure, if you're teaching a low set behaviour management is a skill set that comes down to personality rather than something that can be easily learnt. You quickly find out in teaching whether you are cut out for it or not.

You aren't going to get criticism from me about your opinion on bad bahaviour at schools. I agree, it's a significant problem that isn't properly addressed in many circles. Some teachers' attitudes make the job harder for others and of course poor management can make the school feral.

I'd imagine, back in the day, it was easier because of a more socially conservative culture and the threat of the caine.....I know that if my old man had found out I'd got the caine I would have probably got the belt when I got home.

If you mean teachers leaving I should think poor teachers would be incentivized to stay in teaching for as long as possible as if you can stick it out it's a pretty reliable job and if you get a cushy number it's quite socially rewarding.

While I agree with your focus on behaviour, in my view the deeper truth is that most teachers leave teaching for the same reason many leave many jobs. The level of stress/workload isn't worth the level of pay....Especially, in the case of teaching, which is a job that traditionally requires a degree just to start it....two degrees if you count a PGCE as one.

i reckon its fairly easy to recruit teachers in Poverty cities with cheap housing. And a nightmare in places like London ?

Mmm not so sure about your first sentence, would those schools not have more “pupil issues” to deal with?
Now a nice small school in the country, close enough to relatively cheap housing…

The ex Party Chairman appears to have fiddled his taxes with the connivance of his old Union.

And I thought it was only the Tories who were corrupt greedy bar stewards.

I wonder how many people on here when telling their boss that had a new job and were leaving was pleasantly surprised to be told no problem instead of resigning we'll make you redundant.

Yup, well dodgy. A Corbyn man that the NUM was presumably very keen to support and giving a termination payment (and loan write-offs) was better than a donation. But it wasn't him that dodged the tax it was the Union. I have negotiated personally with the Termination Payments unit of HMRC and this is one of my specialist subjects.

I can only imagine what the Northumberland NUM is like. The TUC investigation of him in 2017 was just total nonsense. It 'found that there were no documents detailing the process or decision about Lavery's redundancy, so no investigation followed'.

Good job we have Sir Keir leading the Labour Party now then, isn't it? And the iNews to call this out. I doubt he will be an MP after the next elections.

So Labour accuse the Tories of a spending spree - which frankly I doubt is out of kilter with any previous years or parties spending and yet immediately it is front page news on every left wing media outlet available.
In particular it is headline news on the BBC website and i briefly switched on ITC breakfast this morning to find the presenters pretty much heckling a Tory MP about it - it verged on the kind of bullying that Raab has been accused of (which isn't bullying at all).
Have the left got nothing better to do?
If they open their mouths with accusations the media run with it and when it is proved wrong no one will hear a word.

Maybe in the humanities, but harder in STEM subjects. Also rough areas tend to find it hard to attract proven professionals of most types for obvious reasons. So the pool they have to chose between won't be stellar.

Lavery has plenty of this in his CV

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

If anyone is offended perhaps the best thing these students can do is not get out of bed in the morning.
