A couple of people on here were saying not so long ago that he was recovering from Covid, if that is true then he will have had a rough pre season, how much of a part he plays in todays game (if any) will probably be a fair indicator of what the club thinks of his future with us (or otherwise)

Its too early to judge him yet, we don't want to make another mistake, if Armstrong signs, with Benteke and Ayew he might not even get on the bench, he is probably only on about 20k a week, loan him for 6 month to a decent championship team that he will play every week, even if we pay all the wages, then will will have a better assessment of him

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

We can't loan out a player we have on loan from another club.

Palace hierarchy learnt from previous striker transfer exploits. We paid big money for Tekkers whilst not a total disaster it didn't quite hit the big hopes they would have liked.

So they then looked to try to bring in young players with potential like Sorloth but the risk with that is you can't guarantee they will be worth it as was the case with Sorloth (I really don't think anyone realistically predicted the bizarre Trapnzonspor/Leipzig ending that was Sorloth's Palace career).

So they went for the Mateta approach. Got him on loan with an agreed fee at the end if he `cut the mustard`. Think we paid something like 3.5mill for the loan, which for 18 months is not too bad as cover. The debate is if he is worth paying to sign fully (IMO he isn't) but it did give us chance to assess him. I don't think we have really lost in this.

Very sensible view on Mateta I think it is early days. I would much prefer to see Mateta leading the line for Palace.
Remember we signed Benteke what was it £27 million plus salary of £5m and in four seasons with Palace he scores 29 Premier League goals per goal £1.62m.

In Benteke's first season his goals kept us in the Prem . How much is that worth ?
I can not see Mateta scoring enough goals to do that [ at present ] He needs time and time will tell .

Unless the rule has changed you can, Leicester and Watford did it

They did indeed, BUT, the loan for the players concerned had either finished or were terminated, thus allowing the player to go on loan to another club.

A player can go on multiple loans throughout a season, several of our players have over seasons gone by. NO loanee club can re-loan same player to any other club, till excisting loan is eith finished or terminated.

If PV has seen enough and doesn’t fancy him then I’m happy he moves him on.

So far I've seen nothing to suggest he is close to being as good as Bentenke, but he is a big physical presence. I think like Crouch his long legs mean he looks a bit weird when he runs which doesn't help; however, if he can score like Crouch then he'll be great, but so far he is yet to convince.

Wasn't there an obligation to buy built in to the loan agreement? Or does it only apply if he plays in a certain number of games?

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
