So Vieira in...

My thoughts (and worth fu*k all).

I'm looking at it in 2 ways.

1. Klopp & Mourinho had to start somewhere. Now we know that being a good or in Vieira's case a great player, doesn't mean you are going to be a good manager (Otherwise it would be Tony Adams or Shearer leading England out tonight and not there team mate from 96).

We can only hope that Vieira has learned lessons from his first few jobs and its been a good learning curve. Now he is back in the Premier league with his knowledge of the league and his contacts he gets us inspired and firing along with moving us forwards at a club.
Thats all we can ask at this stage. The whole manager search has been a joke and as I said in a previous post the main priority was a manager that actually wanted the job to start with.

2. Watching ITV last night, Keane, Vieira and Neville... they all have one thing in common... great pundits but are all there because its not worked out as managers. I was having a chat with a pal last night and I was saying I love Roy Keane and would love him as a manager but unfortunately for him he is from a time long gone and I just can't see him ever working with todays woke/Nancy players that have to be cuddled and have there way every 2 minutes.

I hope my first thoughts are what we get and that we have a great season next year with better football than we have had the last couple of seasons. As somebody on here said, lets hope Vieira sorts out Luka as I think there is a good player in there that has lost his way.
I also think Vieira might be able to get Zaha to not only stay but actually look like he wants to be there again which would be like making a massive signing... hey I can dream.

I had the exact same thoughts in regards to these guys being on TV as pundits.

More often than not, without being too disrespectful, ending up on TV seems to often mean you've accepted things haven't worked out for you in management or they didn't want to be a manager in the first place.

Well, that is my perception anyway which I can understand that others may feel differently.

Viera just seems such an odd choice and not a Palace fit, but I hope I am wrong on all of the above.

I find it quite amazing really the vitriol that is currently being directed towards Vieira by those who are, still, unbelievably, flying the Frank Lampard banner.

Vieira has been coaching for almost 10 years, establishing himself in the City group and working his way up the ranks, where he consistently impressed those around him. Went to a country on the other side of the world and built a team that pushed on every year. Went to Nice and had 2 very decent seasons before hitting a poor run of form and was sacked.

Lampard got a job fresh out of retirement on the basis of nothing besides being Frank Lampard. Went to Derby, was backed and brought in a couple of Premier League standard players on loan and didn't fare any better than Gary Rowett. Went to a Chelsea side full of world class players, stumbled into the top 4, spent over £200m on Champions League winning players and left them in 9th, recording the lowest points tally of any manager in the Abramovich era.

Of course, this is a roll of the dice by Palace. But I will reiterate this - Frank Lampard was and still remains possibly the least suitable candidate for the Palace job.

We will need to back Vieira, we will need to have big Sam on speed dial. But it's not a half bad appointment at all and it's good we're giving it to someone who has earned their stripes to get here.

To be honest very disappointed, but if confirmed i will support him
All appointments are to some degree a gamble but cannot avoid thinking this is a panic appointment no one else has been the least bit interested in him, Keane as his number two? Only joking

Only seen Vieira on TV as a pundit for these European championships, presumably because they wanted opinions on France. He I am sure would describe himself as a manager. If it is him he will be no more of a risk than Lampard Cooper Ismael etc. If we can’t get experience then why not Vierira . He will command respect from the players , whoever they may be as we only have a few at the moment, this will buy him time to show them he is also a good manager. I think respect for the manager from the players is key you only need look at how successful Roy has been over the years. Anyway it is quite likely the way things are tomorrow we will be waking up to a new name for our manager!!!

He would still be quicker than the rest of the midfield in training. We may as well name him in the 25.

Really a guy who failed at Nice in 2018 and managed no where since is a choice for a Premiership side .. will see Roy back in October..

From Nuno to Farve to a nowhere manager, checking the date to see if it’s April. 1, really don’t believe it tbh.

Interesting point(s). I don't think Keane, Vieira, and Neville are entirely comparable as managers, particularly the latter. While Keane and Vieira both aspired to managerial careers and followed a deliberate path in that direction, Neville was a wild-card; a businessman and TV pundit who got offered a manager's job in La Liga by a mate even though he was completely unqualified, and he had the arrogance to take it. He learned the hard way that management is more than just knowing potential tactics in his short, disastrous, reign so comparing him to Keane and Vieira is insulting to them. They're both managers; Neville was a dilettante.

Between Keane and Vieira there are some similarities. Neither demanded a big job to start their careers. Both have been willing to prove themselves at less glamorous destinations. Keane has had some success as a boss, albeit limited. His downfall appears to have been his personality; he couldn't get out of his own way. The problem wasn't his coaching or tactics. As a result of his personality, he's unlikely to manage the game.

Vieira has not had similar problems so far as I know. He's simply never had a high profile job so we don't know that much about him as a manager (I assume most of us don't follow MSL or French football overly closely). But there's nothing in his record to suggest he's unfit to be given a chance to manage a club like Palace.

To say Vieira is now a pundit because "his management career hasn't worked out" is both harsh and wrong. His management career has barely started and it's been at least reasonably successful so far. He's not had Roy Keane's difficulties, and nothing at all like Gary Neville's.

Howe and Lampard are doing to the TV pundit bit, but many are clamouring for them to be hired as our manager. What’s the difference with Vieira?

Thanks. Nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks this.

If you go through the comments section on the Athletic right now and have a butch you'll see you're not.

I'd be lying if I said this appointment is ideal. But in the current circumstances, it could be a hell of a lot worse. And I'm glad we're giving someone like Vieira a chance.

De Boar Mark II, a positive is that Allardyce will be back by end of October.

a Guardian article on his time at Nice - interesting reading but it does not exactly fill one with optimism, the appointment has a bit of an FDB feel to it though I think Viera will be pragmatic whereas FDB was a bit theoretical - so let's give the guy a chance ...

Of course I will support Palace. But if true this appointment is very underwhelming. A high risk appointment and will have to do something impressive very quickly to win the fans round.

Faith in Parish somewhat eroded.
