Just out of interest, why is everyone losing their s*** over the notion that herd immunity was a "strategy"?

Surely, herd immunity is not a strategy, merely an ultimate scientific reality in the vast majority of viruses.

Isn't everyone in the world aiming for herd immunity one way or the other? Isn't herd immunity the precise purpose of vaccination?

Quite correct.

Not really. It's not obvious at all that keeping the economy largely open with obvious caveats in the run up to developing a vaccine would've been any less "catastrophic", considering the economic consequences mentioned already.

As for the rest of your comment, I'm not here to defend the Tories handling of the pandemic. It's just that when people get mad about "herd immunity", I'm not sure why.

I think it was obvious, and a lot of the evidence coming out this morning, shows that the government had a lot of information to suggest what was coming and poor decision making at that time has cost tens of thousands of lives.

Hancock getting absolutely two footed about people being positive being sent back into care homes. Going in on Johnson about not shutting the borders too.

Well I'm sorry but it's not obvious at all.

People's businesses have been shutting down left right & centre, millions are being plunged into unemployment, there are reports of a cancer crisis in the NHS, the world's poorest are getting poorer.

X number of Covid deaths is a headline, but it's only one factor.

We're the Arthur over ere!

But that’s what has happened with what action (or lack of) the government has taken?

We’ve had to get to this point because of the grip the virus has had and continued to have throughout the country. If the government had taken it more seriously at the start and kept the virus out as far as possible/enforced quarantine then we wouldn’t have had to have been in lockdown for so long over such a prolonged period.

We’ve literally had the worst of both worlds.

I have to say! looking at it across the pond! Boris has done an amazing job! All things considered!

Not the biggest fan of vaccines either but the whole vaccines distribution has been brilliant in the UK!

Everything is pretty much back open (I would anti-lockdown in the first place)

I flew over a few weeks ago and everywhere i go there is vaccine centers and free antigen tests offered everywhere! none of that in ireland! And full opening on the 21st! i may just stay here till september!

Cummings is boring already in the circus that is politics today.
What i do not understand - and if anyone knows please say - why is he in front of a select committee anyway?
Who gets to decide?
It is just a s*** show and is pretty much saying that Whitehall and Government are completely useless on everything.
Thing is that since he left it has got a whole lot better - hmmmm - let me think!

The last word I would call today is boring. Been a great watch.

After today it should be vital the public inquiry on COVID-19 happens ASAP.

Some of the testimony that has been offered is damning of the government (albeit from a compromised individual - hasn't put a glove on the Chancellor!)

Any cause for delay would be blatant politicking by the PM who has a track record for this sort of thing.

Ravings of a bitter man who thought he should have been PM .
He was out of the limelight and can now walk with a smug grin .

And odious little s*** of a man. I say that as someone who has lost a parent to the virus and as a self employed individual.

Government has got a lot wrong - but this is the bitter ex going to town.

Cant wait for his book

He may be ‘odious’ and ‘bitter’ but he’s made a lot of very serious allegations about the PM and Hancock, a lot of which looked like they can be backed up, which means both of them have some very serious questions to answer.

If true, they are both directly responsible for tens of thousands of people dying unnecessarily.
