I accept that the government was clueless in the first part of the pandemic. However Cummings is saying it was policy to go for herd immunity and yet this is not backed up by the experts. If he is not careful he will overplay his hand he should stick to the accusations he can prove.

Just out of interest, why is everyone losing their s*** over the notion that herd immunity was a "strategy"? Surely, herd immunity is not a strategy, merely an ultimate scientific reality in the vast majority of viruses. Isn't everyone in the world aiming for herd immunity one way or the other? Isn't herd immunity the precise purpose of vaccination?

Yeah don’t think anyone is questioning that part of it - more that the initial strategy was herd immunity without vaccination as it would not be available until 2021. They were going to be quite happy to let it spread naturally throughout the population and take the collateral damage that came with it. They only changed course when the numbers of deaths and the NHS being overwhelmed to the extent that it could do nothing else became more obvious than it already should have been.

Healthcare systems are also on their knees as a result of Covid. This can also potentially kill a lot of people, but for some reason people only regard direct Covid deaths as the deaths that come about as a result of the pandemic. Also, there would surely be a variety of ways to obtain herd immunity, even without vaccination. It was obvious from what had happened in China and closer to home what was happening in Italy how serious this was and that achieving herd immunity through natural means in a short space of time would be catastrophic. There were plenty of means available to the government to stop the virus seeding here such as shutting borders, enforced quarantines and an effective track and trace system that would have kept virus numbers much, much lower and allowed people to have gone about their business with a lot more freedom than we have been allowed to over the last 15 months.

It's not obvious at all that keeping the economy largely open with obvious caveats in the run up to developing a vaccine would've been any less "catastrophic", considering the economic consequences mentioned already. As for the rest of your comment, I'm not here to defend the Tories handling of the pandemic. It's just that when people get mad about "herd immunity", I'm not sure why.
