Herd Immunity was the official policy of Sweden and there were plenty of experts in the media last year advocating we should follow them.

I am not saying we should have done but with the benefit of hindsight the media and some politicians are now implying it was like genocide when it was actually a perfectly valid strategy that has been used before in other situations.

I agree, I think the suspension of civil laws went too far.

I can't agree that locking up the young and healthy and the way the Police behaved was ever justified in any free country worthy of the name.

But I suppose these are old arguments now.

Having seen about 1 hour of the interview, I am of the opinion that he has told the truth about the craziness of the situation at the beginning of the pandemic. I do, however, look upon him as a kind of Grima Wormtongue character out of the Lord of the Rings whose authority and advice must never be challenged. Not the sort of person to trust with a confidence, and can be likened to a woman scorned.

I believe that politicians should be held to account for their decisions.
Saying they were responsible for thousands of deaths without proof or justification is another matter.

In truth, I seriously believe that no government could reasonably be expected to make the right decision every time given the variables. That said, it seems obvious from the outside that travel from abroad should have been suspended immediately after the first indications of a pandemic.

What the experts advised is unclear.

They made decisions (or shirked making them in Johnson’s case) which directly led to more people dying than was necessary.

If I set fire to your house while you are sleeping is it me or the fire that kills you?

That is a ridiculous analogy unless you think Boris Johnson created Covid.

Even you aren't that deluded.

It feels like he's showing the dirty linen in public.

Is it right to grass over things like this? I can't say I agree....but I don't know what's gone on.

The autobiography should be interesting.

Of course I don’t think he created it but he let the fire rip through the country before he tried to put it out and it was too late. There was so much in Cummings’ testimony today that showed that many thousands of lives could have been saved with different decisions being taken.

He is thoroughly and dangerously incompetent.

Another hindsight expert.

Of course mistakes were made. Anyone would have made mistakes given the unprecedented situation. People bang on about the supposed number of lives lost through what they think is incompetence, but don't say anything about the number of lives saved due to foresight about vaccine availability. Orders were placed for millions of vaccines even before they were developed. Some credit should go to the government for that.

Corbyn must be thanking his lucky stars he didn't get elected 3 months before all this kicked off.

And 1000s more lives would have been lost if the action taken albeit later than ideal wasn't taken. Vaccines, shielding, PPE supplies. People were told "don't mix, don't touch, don't party etc etc" how much blame should the public take. Anti covid rallies and blm, antifa etc have a lot to answer for, as they had rallies after the warnings I mentioned, Who's to blame for that? Boris for not being harder or the woke for bigging these up!
All of us are responsible for not taking it seriously at the start. Hmg and Joe public.

You realise it is possible to think the vaccine roll out has been brilliant but that the initial response to Covid was absolutely woeful don’t you? The latter, along with other decisions around locking down, cost tens of thousands of lives.

Only question that matters politically is this going to move the polling?

And if it is going to impact negatively on Johnson, there needs to be a narrative that somehow Labour would have done better or are more competent overall.

Really?

I suspect it will not damage Johnson significantly. Perhaps a slight movement in the polls but he has more than enough comfort space on those and by the time the next election comes around, might not even have a functioning opposition to even be bothered about.

Also, people are bored of Covid now. They just want to move on. Get back to work, get back to sport, get back to concerts, get back to travelling abroad. It happened, it is over and we move on. Plenty to hurt Johnson between now and the next GE but I think Covid is not going to be it. The success of the vaccine rollout counter-balancing any errors at the start.

Been harbouring a theory for a while now that we might have even evolved to somehow collectively 'forget' about the impacts of pandemics. That humanity has been through so many that we either effectively blank them out or else we would be reduced to quivering wrecks, unable to move from behind our front doors or want to avoid any kind of close contact with strangers. Look how we mock people who obesses over germs? That does not just happen for no reason.

Revenge po0rn seems a good summary.

They did that Brexit drama with Cumberbatch playing Cummings and so on....I wanted to see it but missed it.

I should imagine that all this fallout will be worth another drama somewhere down the line.
