The hard truth for Zaha is that if he stays by next season he probably won't even be the best player at Palace anymore. I wish for him that he'd gotten his move last summer and both parties could have moved on. The truth is, he had a poor season in 2019/20 and no one was going to pay a significant sum for him least of all in the middle of a pandemic. If he wants to carry on playing football for us though he needs to put that behind him and put his heart into Palace. He had a strong first half to this season and I hope he can re-find that form whatever his future may hold. The reality is, if he wants CL football he is going to have to move abroad now, if he and his agent can find a taker. Italy may be an option, but those options are surely disappearing fast.

He will surely never sign a new deal with us, and even if he has to leave us on a free transfer a the age of 30 in summer 2023, he will find his way to a CL club. The question is whether he can get there sooner, which in turn requires a big bid, which is unlikely. Palace will have to manage that situation well, as he remains our most important player as well as a potentially valuable asset to sell.

It feels like we've all been saying that he is having a bad season for three years or so now, but he is once again our top scorer and most likely mastchwinner. It's his body language that concerns really.

There seem to be some that are extremely quick to jump on Wilf's back.

10 goals in 25 starts this season is an impressive stat. 2 assists thrown in as well. He's been directly involved in 1/3 of our 36 goals.

Some might have noticed him busting a gut to get up the pitch which ended up drawing one of the defenders for Eze's goal on Saturday. Even when he has a quite game, the opposition are so busy being preoccupied with him that space becomes available for others.

We'd be crazy to let him go for the £6.2m a season he costs us.

I don't think he has been fully on it for the past couple of seasons.

The failed move away seemed to really P*ss him off. Hence the change in agents once again.

He must be desperate to get a "big move". Trouble is, the pandemic will have affected transfer fees (with the exception of the very top players). Are Palace or Parish willing to accept a lower transfer fee now, given his importance to the team. I really can't see a top 6 team coming in for him.

I had a conversation with a Spurs supporter not so long ago, who said he really wanted him at Spurs. I told him that Zaha obviously has great skill, especially in a 1 on 1 situation, however he is not blessed with great pace, his shooting is abit hit & miss, and he can easily be wound up in games.

I think Wilf missed a golden opportunity when he chose Ivory Coast over England. He hit a purple patch shortly after and would surely have got an England cap. There he'd have had a real chance to shine and could have raised his profile several notches.

Chance missed. However 29 is a lot younger than Vardy for example, and he still has a chance to a return to the heights we know he can reach. He needs get fully fit and to focus on the team which would be best for him as well as Palace. Whether he will or not remains to be seen.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

Zaha has every right to feel frustrated and gutted at his career trajectory. He was the brightest young talent, and could never have envisaged that at his age he'd be just slogging away every week at a lower mid table club. He has a degree of talent beyond anyone else we have yet he has nothing more to show for it than Townsend, Ayew etc in terms of his playing level and opportunities. Yes I know he gets well paid, but he plainly isn't about money as he gives massive sums away to charity. I know he signed the contract of his own free will, but that doesn't mean he can't regret it now.

I've got a real problem with players who sign for clubs like ours in the expectation that they'll only do two years and then get the big move they really want regardless of whether they really advance Palace as a club, but the likes of Zaha are the opposite end of the spectrum. He literally could not have done more for us. We'd never have got promoted without him or stayed up. He has carried the team for years. I literally cannot think of another individual to have done more for Palace - even Wright had a great team around him.

We have hit the glass ceiling as a club and can go no further. Zaha can, but it's passing him by. I would be gutted too if I were him.

i'm not sure he has every right to feel frustrated.

When he signed a 5 year £130k a week contract it made him the best paid Prem player outside the top 6 clubs. So the day he signed that contract he limited the potential clubs who could afford him to about 10 in Europe. He didn't need to sign. Also at that point he and his agent should have inserted a sell price clause - they didn't.

I can see why he was disappointed by the potential move to Arsenal (who clearly illegally tapped him up BTW) as supposedly he was an Arsenal fan but Everton?

He has so much freedom at Palace, is almost undroppable (is that a word?), is loved by the club and is on a massive salary. What's not to like?

Look at Vardy. Had the opportunity to leave Leicester. Decided to stay, signed an improved contract (still less than Zaha!) and has produced the goods without sulking

I agree with most of this. Picking up a couple of points.

When he signed new contract he or his agent should have realised he was effectively signing up for rest of career or we got an offer to good to turn down

Also at that point he and his agent should have inserted a sell price clause - they didn't. This was not an option the new contract was designed to buy out the price clause in previous contract. He took extra money knowing this

We never got a fee offer we found acceptable and as others have said if he signed for a big six club he would not be a starter and this would not satisfy him.

I think he will sign a new contract at end of the current one and it will be on less favourable terms. I am afraid his options are limited no-one will pay him 130k a week at end of current contract for a number of reasons. Football finances have changed. He will be 30 and coming towards end of career. He will have no sell on value. The perception of his attitude.

He has been a great servant for club and no one can deny that. I just hope he can get his head around the reality of his situation and perform week in and week out

All fair points of course, but the thing Zaha has to dislike is that he has plainly made a big mistake, one that may haunt him for life. Le Tissier may have made the right decision to be a one-club legend at a small club when he could have gone onwards to the very top, but most players would feel very differently.

Vardy won the league with Leicester, played in the CL and now the cup final. They are a consistently good side and he (arguably) has fulfilled his potential there, at a club that has not yet hit its limit. I'm sure he might sulk if he were at Palace.

The whole thing is all Wilfs doing of course, and he can only blame himself, but isn't that the worst kind of regret a man can have?

I do feel there's a lot of blinked views on Wilf, only remember the good things, never want to say he is a liability, so many games over the last 3 seasons he has sulked because he didn't get the foul, in the mean time the op is attacking and we only have 10 men because he is still trying to get the ref to change his mind, then gets himself booked or sent off ,

We didnt have him first season up, guess what we stayed up , we dont win games or score when he is not playing, guess what nothing to do with the amount of goals he scores, we just couldn't finish its not rocket science, and that is the same whether he is playing or not.

we needed a strong finisher and another winger, Wilf is good but not great, so see him for the player he is, not who you think he is

The main issue for Wilf is his temperament.

The fact that he is now on his 3rd? agent would seem to indicate there is a problem there somewhere.

He's had poor support and advice and the bloke appears fragile. It shows in his behaviour on the pitch. Now he also has to accept that someone else is our star turn. It gets to him, as BTP said above.

He is no longer the player or the high value asset he once was and, as has been said earlier on here, his best way out now is overseas.

Difficult to see a UK club paying the sort of money we think he's worth and his high wages. And putting up with his petulance. Especially one with CL ability.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Take away Wilf's goals and assists this season and we have 30 points. Realistically you can probably take away more because without him we lose a huge thing for opponents to worry about.

It is beyond question that Wilf is in the top 5 players to play for this club in (at least) half a century. Some say he's our best ever and it's hardly a crazy argument.

He has a bad game on the back of some average form and he gets a dog's abuse.

There is a brutal lack of class and respect on show in this thread.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

Reading through this thread it's clear seems a lot of fans have fallen out of love with Wilf, dont forget it's been a very hard season for both fans and players alike

That said he looks unhappy, It's time for him to go and would be foolish of us to try and hold on to him any longer, I reckon £££'s plus player deal with Arsenal or Chelsea would be the most likely outcome? Ie £40 Million plus Ruben loftus Cheek That'll do me

Chelsea don't need him and there's no way he's worth £40m plus a player - we will struggle to get £35m for him given his performances since the New Year, his age, the remaining length of his contract and his questionable temperament.

Sadly, Wilf is his own worst enemy. I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon.
