If the resurfaced rumour bout Everton coming back in for him, £15m + Ben Godfrey, Done deal. Saw him tear Wet Spam a new one over the w/e. A RB/wing-back who CAN defend, got pace, gets up & down the pitch & has a sweet right foot to put decent crosses in. Just my opinion mind

The question is whether he can get there sooner, which in turn requires a big bid, which is unlikely. Palace will have to manage that situation well, as he remains our most important player as well as a potentially valuable asset to sell. It feels like we've all been saying that he is having a bad season for three years or so now, but he is once again our top scorer and most likely mastchwinner. It's his body language that concerns really. Woosnam at The Athletic reported the other day that he is expected to sign a new deal in the summer. If a new manager came in with fresh ideas it might revitalise him a bit. But yes, his body language is the worry and also something that is becoming a sore point with fans. If he looked like he still wanted to play for us and said so then his performances have always been more than good enough for our level bar the odd game. I expect Eze to put him in the shade next season.

Take away Wilf's goals and assists this season and we have 30 points. Realistically you can probably take away more because without him we lose a huge thing for opponents to worry about. It is beyond question that Wilf is in the top 5 players to play for this club in (at least) half a century. Some say he's our best ever and it's hardly a crazy argument. He has a bad game on the back of some average form and he gets a dog's abuse. There is a brutal lack of class and respect on show in this thread. I completely agree. Something I think contributes to some underappreciation (aside from familiarity breeding contempt) is that Wilf has gone from being a flying winger to a kind of inside striker. As a flying winger he was constantly involved in the game, fed the ball at every opportunity so that he could run at the full-back. His end product was not always there, and he was doing a lot of his best work in the wide areas or the middle third of the pitch, which is a long way from goal, but the roar around Selhurst every time he'd run at someone was fantastic. He was not just the best player and most likely match winner, he was the cause of all our attacking threat and momentum. He would go at the full-back again and again and again driving the whole team forward. As an inside forward he is involved in the game far less. We don't look for him (or he isn't available as much) in build-up play - he is waiting to get on the end of things where he can do the most damage. In an interview at the start of this season, he was asked if he had any advice for Eze, and Wilf explained that he had stressed the need for 'efficiency', something he had become entirely focused on himself. I took that to mean less beating full-backs for the sake of it, showing off your tricks, and more shots and goals. This inevitably means positioning himself closer to goal rather than out on the wing where he can take on an isolated full back. He is perhaps following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo in that respect. Less fun but better numbers.

I think he still has a long way to go to come up to the consistent levels Wilf has shown over many seasons. COYP

Roy has let him play in the hole the last few games and he has noticeably grown in confidence, constantly looking to make space, whereas wide left he drifted in and out of games. Wilf took a long time to add an end product to his game whereas Eze looks like he already has it. They're very different players and I hope they get to play together for another season, but I think the focus will continue to shift towards the apprentice. Eze looks like an ice skater the way he glides around the pitch and seems so calm.

He has still scored 10 goals for us this season, if any of our other players did that we'd be raving about them.

Earlier this season he was saying in a podcast interview (perhaps with Rio Ferdinand?) that he feels poorly advised, in hindsight, by his then agent regarding the decision to sign his current deal with us. He was careful with his words and does seem very fond of and respectful towards Palace, but he parted company with his then agent a year or two ago, so plainly not thrilled with the way his career was being managed.

Having seen him whacked by many defenders and midfielders over the years and too few times has our captain(s) stepped in and pressured the refs this and the too few times that the ball in the box has been threating from our various strikers yes including Wilf. Against that Wilf has given up too often after not being helped by his colleagues. I reckon it's about 2/3 in Wilf's favour and he is more sinned against than sinner.
Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course). |

If a bid of £40 - £50 million comes in, should should snap their hands off. Failing that then we hold on, try and add around him and Eze and go again. The hardest thing to replace is goals and, as mentioned, Wilf’s in double figures this season which cannot be sniffed at. If we were to generate a healthy sum from his sale, I’d love to see us go out and sign Ivan Toney (25yo) and Connor Gallagher (21yo). The buzz these two would create alongside fans returning would give the club a real lift.

Interesting thread. Lots of different opinions. All I would add is that just because we're saying it's time for him to move on and questioning his form, doesn't mean we're being rude or disrespectful. We can still acknowledge the role he's played for us up until now AND think it's time to move on. Very few players get better as they get older. If he was going to be a star ripping up the champions league, it should've happened by now. Eze is our future and probably already our best player. Time to enjoy the Wilf era for what is was and move on.

Time to enjoy the Wilf era for what is was and move on. He is an absolutely fantastic signing for the club, and a great player, but for a club like us, he is still very much a luxury. A number 10 of his sort always will be. There are going to be games, in a team such as ours where he goes missing, and we still haven't been able to utilise him effectively enough over the course of this season. If your way of determining Eze is our best player is on the basis of "form", you're way off imo. Wilf has been in considerably better form over the course of this season and you could quite easily make the case that he's in contention for another player of the year award. Without Wilf, we would've gone down. Without Eze? no chance. Writing Wilf off on the basis of a couple of quiet games (where he's still had his moments - he always does, the best players always do) strikes me as madness. Selling him seemed sensible a couple of seasons ago where we genuinely could've turned the type of profit that would enable us to strengthen the squad, whilst also allowing him to fulfil his ambitions. Selling him now, when he's approaching 29, with a decreased market value, doesn't seem sensible to me at all. Edited by Mstrobez (10 May 2021 10.07pm)
