Out of our previous players players who've gone on to manage UK national teams, Venables, Southgate, and Coleman have gone on to reach semi finals of major tournaments. That's objectively more successful than being eliminated in the first round after failing to win a game, or being knocked out in the 2nd round losing to a country of a population of 300,000 (tesco's have more 50% more employees). Whilst I admire some fans loyalty to our manager. I do feel other options get dismissed for minor blemishes earlier in their career, whilst the incumbents failings are willfully ignored. I'd have questions over Southgate's ability to manage on a day to day basis, but his root and branch reform of the England set up has been pioneering in English International football. Either way, he's not leaving England, to it's all theoretical. There’s a wealth of difference between managing internationally and managing a club side. For me, Southgate doesn’t inspire confidence and granted, has done ok as England boss at a time when English clubs are flying and the PL is the best league in the world. Venables was always a top coach and was picked for England because of that (same as Robson, Sven etc). Some top club coaches make poor international team coaches and vice versa but I reckon Southgate would just be another Peter Taylor and we’d soon be fed up with him standing on the touchine looking confused as with Boro.

I'm not in favour of Southgate as a manager for us but to give him some credit your view of him at Boro is very wrong. Although at the time it was felt by the fanbase up here that Boro should have been doing better than they were the vast majority of Boro fans were in support of Southgate and boro fans realised what a great job he was doing here with limited funds after he left when they really collapsed and have never been able to recover since. International managers rely on clubs to bring through their players considering the number of players in English football at all levels it's not difficult to find 22 for a squad. I feel sorry for managers of smaller nations who probably rely on a once in a generation star player and it's bad luck if its not on their watch. The only job the IM has to do is find a system that suits the players or pick the players to suit the system. After that the players know what they need to do they are all they are experienced at the senior level. Frankly I am amazed ah how poorly England has been over the last 50 odd years for a country our size semi finals is par with the odd tournament win. Southgate has done okay but I think being a club manager is much harder. Neither him or Coleman were anything special at club level.
