I saw two teams that were rather evenly matched, and the outcome came down to the most fickle of tests. England outplayed Italy for the first 30 minutes, then gradually Italy gained the confidence which they deserved to have, and in the second half the trend continued. Italy looked to be the more skilled team, by a little, and the more experienced team, by quite a bit. Southgate did well to bring the team to the final, and on penalties he and his assistants clearly did everything they could to ensure their best chances. The players fell short. Remember that Harry Kane himself struck a poor penalty the last time he attempted one. It's a crapshoot, always.

Totally disagree.
We had the better squad.
They had the better manager.
Their managerial careers point to that.
Stop accepting failure as " oh well, it happens "
Put Kopp or Pep , Louis Enrique, even Mancini in charge of our squad and we blitz it.
I can accept Palace being a bit s*** with boring or unproven management, because I really don't know any better and accept the financial restrictions.
England
NO.
we can afford anyone, not just a halfwit who says the right things to the press.

Totally disagree, had a bye to the final and people got carried away. Massively overhyped and overrated squad. The last World Cup and this euros were a once in a generation opportunity to win a trophy with an easy run to the final and they came up short.

Spot on, our best players in my opinion, Grealish and Foden hardly got a kick, The Penalties were a disaster, two players cold off the bench, and the final penalty a 19 year old whose never taken a penalty in a serious game, he smacks of Roy to me, Southgate had a fantastic squad and didn't use it

Tactical mismatch which was entirely predictable. Had shades of the Croatia semi final. Totally dominant for the first 30 mins and should have capitalised on that. Instead GS tries to shut up shop which always invites pressure - it’s the dumbest tactic in football.

The game was crying out for Grealish to come on and take the game to the Italians, but he left it too late, as usual. He allowed them to run all over us. World class squad with an average manager, the players deserve better. Southgate does all the non important parts of his job well, but doesn’t have the nous to win against a big team on a big occasion. We couldn’t have had easier paths in the last two tournaments and this makes our run to semi and final seem more impressive that it actually is.

Two things really pissed me off with the penalties. Firstly, why do players persist with the fancy stuttering run up? All you have to do look through the pens in this tournament to see that about 75% of the time this fails. What’s wrong with a simple no nonsense run up and smashing it in the corner out of the keepers reach like Kane and Maguire? - it’s a pretty simple closed skill for a professional footballer - much like a snooker player potting a spotted black or a golfer rolling in a flat 5 foot putt.

Secondly, why was the least experienced player on the pitch given the responsibility of such an important penalty? Henderson and Walker who are the two most senior players in the squad and multiple trophy, were winners replaced with two kids. I’m also so angry with the manner of Rashford’s miss. We had the initiative and he tries to be clever and misses the target.

I’m gutted for Saka. The lad had a terrific tournament and deserves nothing but praise. He shouldn’t have been put in that situation in the first place. I hope he realises that and can bounce back. He’ll carry that miss for the rest of his career. This was Southgate’s failure, not his.

End over end I can't help but think we bottled it.

Had a goal advantage and played the better football first half and then stage fright kicked in big time in the second half. Credit to the Italians for changing it up but all the same we were awful.

Got back into it in ET then had an advantage on the shootout but then bottled that. Hugely disappointed neither Sterling nor Grealish stepped forward and especially that Saka was left to the the last one.

More often than not if your goalie saves 2 pens you almost always win a shootout but we were that nervous we missed 3.

Gutted. Now have to do a day's work hungover.

Apropos Saka, I suppose he can console himself with the fact that 2 of his team-mates also missed penalties and they have an impressive penalty taking record.

Prior to last night,Rashford had scored 15 and missed 2, Sancho had scored 10 and missed 1.
Saka has never taken a penalty for Arsenal to the best of my knowledge. He has scored 2 in a Youth Cup match and in an U18 International friendly and missed 1, in a penalty shoot out in another U18 International friendly.

Agreed. Sancho and Saka are kids they get a pass in my book. Where were the experienced players?

As for Rashford's penalty, idiotic?

He lost form at United during the second half of the season he shouldn't have been selected. During the tournament I saw nothing of his brief appearances to change that opinion.

Any coach will tell you when you lose form go back to the basics he should just have taken a run and hit the ball, nothing fancy. I hate all this trickery it looks great when it works but if the keeper guess's right he will save it. Just hit the bloody ball.

Can't disagree with any of that . Like the WC semi we had the game under control and should have pushed on for a second . Sitting back failed then it it failed again .

And we still need a striker

I am not entirely convinced that this was a deliberate tactic.

We were pushed back by an Italian team that moved the ball well, we ended up with Kane deep into the England half and when we gained possession we could not retain the ball, could not instigate any counter attacks and the pattern continued with Italy having the lion's share of possession.

Ticketless fans.

I was surprised that fans without tickets were able to push their way into the ground last night , appalling security lapse and totally foreseeable.

How were they allowed to get so close to the stadium without a ticket? I think in Istanbul when the scousers tried it the found they had to bypass multiple check points before they even got close to ground so gave up and resorted to mugging their own.

GS and his team a real credit to the country.

The rest of it, good riddance.
