Ha ha, yes sure you are correct. But perhaps it could be considered both? Doomed to failure(Palace wasn't going to get anything from the game) and Damage Limitation(trying to prevent Chelsea reaching a record score).

Actually it was a deliberate ploy to buy time for Sam Houston and others to raise an army which they did and a few months later routed Santa Ana. The rallying cry of the troops was remember the Alamo.

So not a bad analogy by the end of the year we should have a fit squad "Remember the Bridge lads"

I re-iterate that was never my intention.

My 'Relegation zone' comment was made in jest and my other sentiments reflected my honest opinions.
The great and good will disagree of course but that is their prerogative.

You claim to have been a supporter for 50 odd years, so its reasonable to assume you something about football. Did you really expect a new manager trying to build a new team to go away to the European Champions and hit the ground running a give them a shock and hold them out for 90 minutes.
Then you start banging on about being in a relegation spot, hoping your 8 year old prediction of relegation may happen with 37 games to go.

we came to play in more attacking style than we would have done under Roy Tony or Sam. We got beat by a better side no shame in that. Hopefully PV will take a team in transition to safety mid table and cup run. Building rather revolution but we shall have to hold on to hats for sure.

We lost and that's fair enough against the players chelsea have. But it's the tactics that worry me not our players

It's the first game of a new season under a new manager against one of the top sides in the country.
Notably the majority of our team is the same as last season, so I wouldn't expect some miraculous transformation overnight. I would look at our results and style of play over the next couple of months and then make an assessment.

Wouldn’t it be great to start the first match of a season with your full squad rather than having to wait until the transfer window closes? Those multi million pound clubs start with such an advantage that clubs like us are on the back foot from game one. We had a weaker team out yesterday and the aging squad from the last one with Roy’s tactics would have given Chelsea a better game. Let’s hope we get a couple of 1st team signings in to compete with those we have waiting to start? Andersen from his short cameo looks class and is the only positive I can come up with from the first game of a new season. There were a few of our players that looked out of place in the premiership yesterday :-(

Unfortunately when there are games like this you can see how the whole super league thing makes a bit of sense - the gulf in class / superstars on show / even the bench often cluttered with international players - I honestly think that the super league will come, ( some super league structure will eventually be put in place) whether that's under the UEFA banner or some third party organisation.

Here in Thailand, I switched off at half time, knowing that if it was Palace v Big Boy, I shouldn't have bothered in the first place. The gap is too great - the opposition players are too good individually and in team play. Let's be honest, but we were totally outplayed and dominated. It was another exercise in damage limitation, more like the Alamo. The pre-season friendlies when we retained the ball, moved, passed well, dealt with the opposition 'press', created and scored - all counted for absolutely nothing here.I can't really understand why it's so particularly poor with Palace. Other lesser teams still lose, but at least are able to make it look like a contest! Not a criticism of Vieira or the team - just a statement of fact that money means the big teams are, usually, in a different world.

With respect,I assert, yet again that my comment apropos being in a relegation position was tongue-in-cheek.

In terms of the rest of your comments, I believe that I elucidated on HOL that the team was basically the same as last season.I was certainly not expecting any tangible transformation straight away but alas the performance and result was disappointing.
I fully agree with Vieira that the squad is in need of further purchases and I am hopeful we will acquire more in this window.

Finally, I have been an ardent supporter since the 60s and supported the team through thick and thin.

Did you expect any different against Chelsea away?

No point banging on at Willo.

We were absolute s***e yesterday. Do I expect to beat Chelsea away…no not at all. But I would like us to be competitive and other than Chelsea controlling the game they didn’t do a lot themselves.

If we want to be a top half team then these are the games we can’t sit down and take a whopping in. We should kinda expect to be losing 2-1, 1-0, 3-2. Instead we barely put an attacking move together. That’s what annoys me. It’s not the getting beat. It’s having 1 shot on target in a whole game that really winds me up.

We have some players that are currently not good enough at this level…and while we persist with them I think we may struggle.

Mateta
Ayew
Mitchell

we did a good defence for most of the first half.

many other teams would not have managed that yesterday.

And 3-0 is better than the cricket scores seen elsewhere. Against the Champions of Europe in their own backyard.

yes they did beat us, but we didnt make it easy for them.

I am among the most optimistic of "glass half full" people, but even I didn't expect anything other than a defeat yesterday. So it wasn't the defeat that bothers me. It was the manner of it. Chelsea didn't have to break sweat, or get out of second gear. It was like a training game against their under 18s for them. We might be playing in a new way, but no-one seemed to know what it was, or show much fight. Playing like that against even the lesser sides in the PL we will get turned over by effort alone.

I know it's early and there were a few reasons to be cheerful among the dross, but there's clearly a long hard season in front of us.
