Good thing that's not what I'm suggesting. Can someone of about 60 explain to me why bills are going up so significantly while energy companies post profits into the billions? So if they dropped their prices to allow a profit lower than they are getting it would do what?

I don’t know how much the energy problem affects french government debt but their debt burden will be as huge as it was 14 years and will continue to be because they treat everyone with the maximum support and perks you could expect in almost every situation with things like maternity and paternity leave and job losses. Somewhere that has to be paid for and it isn’t via a windfall tax. Last time France tried that their rich citizens landed in Londinium. I do agree that the government should tax the energy firms more, but let’s not pretend France have mastered running their country and finances just because something they’ve done (nationalising energy) has eventually worked out right now. We have no trading relationship with the EU and trade has dropped by 15%, even Sunak has had to admit it. Brexit is making deep inroads to our economy. The NI contributions increase for example should have been covered by the 350 millions a week for the NHS. It never existed of course, it included Thatcher's rebate anyway. We left but are still a net contributor for precisely nothing. 'One man's bus slogan is another man's tax increase'.

At least that way you can see something akin to results. On a national level it's all too often pantomime with us being the mugs buying tickets to watch it on repeat. May as well tune them out, though easier said than done!

I can't believe I have to explain this, but it would mean we're not all hit with a monstrous increase in cost. I really don't understand your position - mass poverty, people not being able to turn their heating on in one of the richest countries in the world, but you're happy as long as the energy companies get to make billions out of it (and not even pay a decent tax rate on that) We're being taken for an absolute ride, and you're cheering it on.

I can't claim to know a great deal about French finances, but at a glance their citizens seem to benefit from far more protections and support than we ever have, and whilst you seem to position it as a bad thing, it seems they have a government who are held to account and actually try to improve the lives of the population. Our government is failing to do that in even the most basic of ways.

What he did actually pledge (not a made-up fantasy) is to nationalise utilities which seems an eminently sensible idea given the rises we now face. France have capped price rises at 4%... Except that it then has to be paid for via taxation, while being run with far less efficiency.
