No one has the free speech to criticise what he said? He's a donor rather than a public figure. I suspect the percentage of the public who knew who he was before this was very low. The media report said words, the public react by finding said words abhorrent, and within a week the news cycle moves on. In your free speech land, how does that play out any different? The public? I suspect your political bubble has...the general media has...The majority of people probably don't care that much. Like I said, consequences for the wealth class have always been muted for obvious reasons. However, I expressed my concerns for the general public and cited two examples off the top of my head.....There is the fact that a few years back more people were arrested in the UK for mean words on the Internet than in Russia....and Russia's population roughly doubles ours. So forgive me if I differ somewhat with your lack of concern over consequences for opinions the state doesn't like.

Use “mean words” on the internet in Russia and you are less likely to be arrested than here but much more likely to fall out of a window or suffer an unfortunate encounter with a nerve agent.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Yeah, everybody knows that they don't have prisoners in Russia, they just shoot everybody. Like someone told me that Russia doesn't have opposition parties when it takes about two minutes to find out that the communist party runs every election and polls about fifthteen to twenty percent. Anyway this isn't about Russia....I should have known that even mentioning that country would trigger some neo con messaging.

I wouldn't accuse the speaker of being racist, it is sufficient to say 'as thick as two short planks'. Ms. Abbot, you know the one who the tory donor said ought to be shot, has to stand up 37 times and even then he doesn't call her. I mean who is it about then. Why is she not Labour MP for her constituency she was elected as such by 45,000 people and has clearly been their choice for the last two elections. But she said something silly, oh dear, and so Stalin has to suspend her.

She was suspended for saying a great number of silly things over a long time. She was given a lot of leeway but had become a liability if not an outright embarrassment.

She was suspended because she offended the Jews. Too White for her obviously. It's harder to get a question in when you are an independent. She has made 'racist' comments on a number of occasions. Perhaps she should give her seat back.

She maybe a nut job but the debate was about her, you would think the Speaker would have thought her contribution was relevant. I know lots of MPs try and fail to get noticed by the Speaker (time is limited) but the topics known in advance. If the Speaker is doing his job properly he will guess in advance who will want to raise a question. In this case you did not need to be Sherlock Holmes. Senior Labour figure, Prime Minister and err oh yes Diane Abbott who the topic is about. Failing to notice an MP is one of the petty revenge powers of the Speaker, has Diane upset him in the past?

I think challenging the use of 'public figure' and 'the public' is very nit-picky. Again, this is nothing to do with an opinion 'the state doesn't like' - I'd imagine most of government quite liked the commentary in private - and as far as I've seen, there is absolutely no talk of criminal proceedings or anything close to that. So you're crowbarring it in. What consequences are you talking about here? Specific to Heston I mean. And to ask again, how else could this possibly play out? In free-speech land, Heston's comments get published by the media... what difference in reaction would you be comfortable with?
