The reason ‘wokeness’ hacks people off as I see it is because the feelings of the majority are being largely ignored. The Colston statue was the perfect example. Did the majority think that history should be left alone and that the future is more important, yes absolutely and yet a minority are now trying to re-write the history of Bristol to appease, you guessed it, another minority and appear to be able to do so without let or hindrance.

If people want to learn about slavery then it should be taught in school, warts and all and that includes white slavers, black slavers, Arabic slavers and how the world developed despite its ugly past. You can go on and on but the point is, it is history and to tear down our country’s history simply because a minority feel morally offended by something that has had zero impact on anyone living in our country today is wrong.

Woke to me are those who feel morally offended in a certain situation on behalf of others despite that situation having zero impact on their lives and it generally involves a minority holding sway over a majority. It might not be everyone’s idea of what woke is, but that’s how I see it.

Yep. This all began with the Diana’s death and the indulgence in grief. Not only that but there is nobody around now to keep these people in check like I’d like to think she would’ve done. Social media and the ability to ‘cancel’ people who slip up or refuse to ‘go along to get along’ means it’s all wrapped up in the public eye. Away from the public eye you get a different viewpoint. Another major issue is in the police. Different approaches depending on the cause. Compare XR blocking roads and BLM to anything really. But one thing I have had my eyes open to is higher sentencing for black people in court.

Hiya Eaglecops.

The trouble is that I often hear people use terms like 'minority' and majority' assuming, I think, that they are accurate in doing so when they have no statistical proof that this is so; it's based on their own experience of people they mix with, invariably having views similar to their own.

Do you know what I mean?

I have only lived in Cornwall since 2014. Prior to that, I have lived in many places in the UK. Including Croydon and Coventry. I have also seen genuine deprivation in other places around the world. So if this was common knowledge, I would have experienced it.

I don't doubt that the term "gay" was in the OED, but just like "woke" was a slow burner and only became part of the common language much later.

Of course. Anyone who's lived in both Croydon AND Coventry would have a preternatural advantage when it comes to staying abreast of the zeitgeist.

So the minority might be a majority, and that gives them licence to favour themselves over everyone else.

What an interesting concept.

You clearly have never lived in Coventry!

That is both predictable and ironic. Now you should try for funny.

Is that really what I wrote?

But if that was the case then no, of course.

Works all ways

Would you stop posting in italics. It makes you seem weird.

What exactly are you saying? Because it's rather hard to follow your logic.

Yes, me too.

Hidden agenda.

On the US Politics thread there are examples and criticisms of wokery posted quite regularly. I recently posted a clip of criticism of the woke reaction to Ron DeSantis's parent's bill....which the left renamed the 'don't say gay' bill in Florida.

That maybe so but it still is, indeed, a right-wing buzzword.

Often also a cloak to cover prejudice.

In my experience that's mostly leftist propaganda. Most people know 'woke' when they see it.

Would you please stop telling me to stop writing in italics. What an assertion: if I write in italics (even if quoting a previously written comment), it makes me seem weird. You really have an arrogant, dictatorial way about you, Hrolf, which is not necessary. I'm not your enemy. Although, I must admit I wrote that in italics to provoke a response and by, jingo, you fell for it.

My logic is that people of all sides should stop imagining that their view is 'the majority' without proof.

Not that difficult to understand. I think you may be confused because I applied that to everyone and not just people I disagree with. Perhaps it wasn't one-sided enough for you and that caused surprise and confusion.
