I'm not so sure Newcastle is in play. For one thing, they appear to be actively pursuing Anthony Gordon and I can't imagine they'd sign both him and Gallagher. It'd be either/or. And for another, they're already stretching FFP rules. They may have money, but there's a limit to what they can spend.

What to believe, Syd? Now rumoured that both Chelsea and Newcastle are growing cold on Gordon. All we can do is wait till Wednesday and see what has and hasn't happened. In the meantime...

I think Gordon is to Everton what Zaha was to us couple of years ago - worth more to Everton to keep him there than he would be worth on the open market & the thought of selling him (Star Player) would cause considerable unrest among the fan base -

In the case of Everton the fans already have enough to worry about -

If Moises Caicedo signs from Brighton, Conor must think he moves farther down the line, i wouldnt be unhappy with an attacking midfied of Eze-Gallagher-Olise with Doucoure and Hughes behind at the start of next season, Loan to buy at the end of the season, if no new contracts are given, 460k a week, 24m for the season, a 25m loan over 3 years is doable, Conor is on 50k a week at Chelsea, the same as Schlupp and Tomkins at Palace

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

We probably wouldn't be a bad side like that. An obvious problem would still be the lack of cover. I think they will renew Schlupp, not sure about anyone else - just a hunch on my part. Just because Schlupp can cover a few positions. And yes, I know Kouyate was similar but the story coming out is that he didn't want to stay. What's true or not, I don't know.
However, I think my gut feeling is that we won't get Gallagher. Not now anyway.

Everton have bid £40m+£5m add on according to that Fabrizio fella on twitter. Would put us out of the race for him, most definitely.

Financially, for sure.

But Gallagher would be nuts if he sees his future at that club at this moment in time.

I love the Guardian's comment:

It is unlikely the 22-year-old will want a move to Goodison Park.

I saw that, it was run alongside the story on ursine defecation locations.

Strikes me as the chancing of an arm if not an attempt to appease upset and self-pitying scousers... another new phenomenon.

I don't see this as likely but it certainly does rule out any chance we'd have of signing him permanently if that offer is correct and is rejected by Chelsea or even just CG himself.

I'd very much welcome him back but every time I hear further on any CG link, or see it on here, I am reminded of individuals from my own life experience who relentlessly pined over somebody who was never going to return their love.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Not sure why it would rule us out. Overpaying in an attempt to get themselves out of where the bears poo.

If he won't go there it doesn't matter how much is bid.

I do agree, however I feel as though that would set the bar, so to speak, and I cannot see nor would I think it wise for us to play that game. Just an opinion of course.

I think that this is the time to see if texor and co are on board. We all know we want him at the club so let’s see if we match it??

He's rejected Everton. It appears that the Everton offer matched what Chelsea were happy to sell Gallagher for (all per SSN). Apparently he's only interested in either staying at Chelsea or moving to a club with European football. Consequently, he won't want to come to us. Furthermore it is suggested that as much as Newcastle would like him they do have FFP constraints that would make it difficult for them to meet Chelsea's valuation.
