Probably not the way to send one of the club's most iconic players on his way. I would prefer simply to offer him a wage that is in line with our wage structure (less than he's getting now because his impact now is less than it was when he signed the last contract) with a two year term and an option to extend for 1 or 2 years depending on how Zaha plays and how his body stands up to the growing rigours of PL football.

Isn't that the same thing as saying, thank you and goodbye, dont worry to much about offending him, club comes first, and he has his 47m to keep the wolf from the door.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

Right on the money. If he stays now he should be paid in line with our policies.

Just an observation. I have previously suggested Palace make any offer to Wilf heavily incentive based and have been shot down.

Incentive payments are standard in the game these days.

As an example when Newcastle's Joelinton (bought for £40m) was recently in court his 'basic' wage was reported as £43k a week. I thought this quite low for such a big (on paper) signing, especially as Palace don't have many 1st team players on less than £50k.
However, most wage website report his wage as over £80k a week so c50% appears to be based on incentives - individual (games played, goals, assists etc) and team - wins, points, champ league qualification etc.

Therefore, i will repeat my previous suggestion. If Wilf is to stay it needs to be within our wage structure and any 'extras' should be performance based.

Incidentally, after Wilf OE is reported as our highest earner on over £90k a week. Hopefully this includes a big goal bonus!!

It feels to me a little like the Roy situation where he's something of a safety net for us and we're afraid to chance what might happen without him.

Given his stature at the club it's understandable that everyone wants him to stay but if you remove the emotional element from it and it was another player who has shown signs of slowing down in terms of pace, explosiveness and a few injuries, nobody would think this supposed four year deal for that kind of money is a good idea.

I do hope he stays, of course, and suspect that there are probably talks happening in the background. If the reality of the situation, though, is that he's weighing up offers and we might miss out on other opportunities while we wait, then I hope we don't give it too long before making the decision ourselves.

Basically, yes. Just not as blunt as your suggestion.

Wilf has been great for the club, but his best days are behind him now. Nobody wants him as he unbalances the team, has a reputation for going down too easily and permanent sulking. Talk to fans from other clubs and you find out the love for Wilf goes no further than Selhurst Park.

Seeing out your career in the French or Saudi Leagues, despite the money, will not be something to look back on.

For the first time I feel it's time to part company. The team performs well without him being the spearhead . It makes sense financially as well.

I'm also rather fed up him being such a miserable bvgger on the pitch. Must be tough on his salary.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

I think like Simon Jordan mentioned on Talksport before yes footballers are overpaid and they get far more then they ever believed. But the economics of giving Zaha a new contract makes sense. Say Zaha was given a 5 year contract (£200,000) that is an extra £70k on his reported current salary. The total extra cost over 5 years is around £18m. It is very hard to find a player like Zaha for £20m plus the new player you will need to pay his salary which would probably be at least £70,000/week so that is a £20m transfer fee plus £18m over 5 years salary for a player on £70k a week total cost = £38m as opposed to giving Wilf a new contract = £18m so it is £20m less. Simon Jordan also mentioned Zaha probably has the same talent as Mahrez. If you put Zaha in a Liverpool or City he would get unreal numbers. Palace are set up differently to the bigger sides and they play a certain way.

[Link]

Plus Zaha is proven in the EPL there is no doubt whether he can perform at the highest level or not. Can easily score 10+ EPL goals a season something which Palace strikers cannot do. His goals will earn Palace more money because the higher you finish in the table the more prize money you get.

Now this is the issue. Palace need to reassure him and improve the squad (RB, midfielder and clinical striker) I think what is stopping him signing the contract is whether Palace have ambition to really go as high as they can e.g. top 8 possibly into Europe with momentum. To have a chance of that they need a striker who scores over 13 EPL goals a season, another midfielder and RB for sure. If Palace can get additional signings and Zaha to stay then they can become an established top 10 EPL side for sure year on year fighting for Europe in some seasons and potentially winning something e.g. an FA CUP, EFL CUP if luck is on their side. If Zaha was playing against Forest I think Palace win that game you can see how much he was missed.

One might begin to think Zaha runs the club and everything revolves around him...

Wasn't it you that said that the club had been sold and an announcement would be made after the end of the season?
