Adams won't score many goals but could be a very good signing anyway.

The key criteria for a new forward is whether they help get the best out of Olise, Eze and Zaha if, as appears increasingly possible, the latter stays. To do that, we needs a hard working, mobile, slightly selfless forward to work the opposition centre backs, hold the ball up before bringing the creative three into play, and yet run behind the opposition to give the big three a pass to play.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Eze and Olise flourished when Ayew played up front, as he has far more of the necessary attributes than Edouard or Mateta. Adams would perhaps bring the same industry and sacrifice as Ayew but also bring greater athleticism, a few more goals and a bit less 'winning free kicks'.

Plus, it's not like it's a choice between Adams and Harry f***ing Kane is it?!

Agreed, i would rather start the season with Adams than nobody

Adams was joint 58th scorer in the 22 premier league. But look at what was in front of him, and how many of those were actually strikers of the accepted sense . If you stick to those known as strikers only the most expensive score regularly . Here’s a link.

There is an argument for keep dipping our hand in the general European pot for a maybe, if you exclude the fact that we have done that with Sorloth, and Mateta, it hasn’t actually been that successful.. One things for certain really prolific strikers don’t come along in great numbers.

Along with, inter alia, Edouard.

That’s the fact of it, should they be talked of or considered strikers? The chart shows that outside of a few outstanding performers mostly to be found in the top six to eight , goals actually come from throughout teams. Many high scorers are not considered strikers, whilst many of those considered strikers have not got exceptional hit rates.

We seem to have a lot of HOLers saying who we dont want, but no one coming up with a sensible suggestion, maybe most are happy with Ed and Mat

I’d prefer to stick with OE and JPM than take Adams.

I think he is worth a punt, gets in good positions but should score more and maybe would at Palace. He also seems to be not to injury prone either.

To be fair, I don’t think I’d of identified Eze, Olise, Andersen, Guehi, Doucoure or even Johnstone as transfer targets but they might possibly be the best players at the club right now. I’d also add that I’m not paid anything to scout for palace however even if they were to replace my current wage, let alone football money, I’d happily do so.

All that said I think 15mil would be a fair amount for Adams, I’d just hope for better than that. If he performs as well as he can he would still be an underwhelming signing. Again, for me, he is a player who has great physical presence but would perform a role similarly to how we (at least wanted to have) had Benteke play. Good physical presence, quite neat, can hold the ball up and move it on but would he score goals? The answer there is most likely yes, but not anywhere near as many as we’d need or want.

In a perfect world I’d rather see us offload Mateta and use the £10+ mil on top of an existent forward budget to bring someone in who I’d consider the most likely candidate for a ‘First Goalscorer’ bet. I don’t think Adams is that player but as mentioned we might struggle to do any better… in fact that may be the safest bet!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

He is an underwelming signing in many ways. However he ticks lots of boxes He harries, holds ball up , is a constant worry to defenders and scores a few goals. I think he would fit the ethos of Palace and would not cost too much. On balance would be a good signing.

We have gone through a number of strikers and none have been consistent while we are in EPL. Before someone says Murray he was prolific in Championship and then later for Brighton. He failed at Bournemouth in EPL too. So could our major problem be that we do not create chances for our strikers to score goals. I wonder if Edouard would look more lively if he got better service he looks to have lost all confidence

I hope that Zaha makes up his mind soon so we can move on and decide if we need a winger to feed the striker or a combined winger/striker who relies on a hold up player to create his chances

Where is he going to get better chances at a mid-level team than at one which fields, Zaha Olise and Eze!?

Our best bet is that he sends out a homophobic tweet and the Saudis are all over him like a rash
