Personally I favour a knife law similar to guns. Five years imprisonment for being in possession of a bladed instrument, maybe a licensing system for essential users. Education a must, kids to be shown what life would be like behind bars, and the extreme unlikelihood of avoiding detection. The Met are successful in clearing up murder (clear-up rate 90%) noticeable how quickly the perpetrator was tracked. There will still be tragedies even then, its a question of turning the odds against them.

We are told but out of 2 million people, statistically the numbers show its not a big problem. Then we have one troll account out of over a billion users on twitter racially abuse a footballer, all week on sky sports we are told how big a problem racism is etc

You can call me a coward. But to me, Sadiq's buses have always felt risky in the Outer Suburbs. Especially the upstairs on the bus after 3pm. when twenty urban yoof get on, you always wonder if a knife has just boarded the bus also ?

One of the big problems in the UK and US is that we have gone soft on crime and the criminals know it and are emboldened or at the very least confused as to consequences. The reality is that many human beings are nasty creatures and do not act like adults if you treat them as such. They need strict rules and control. The Liberal left turn a blind eye to this reality. The mainstream media almost champion the scum bags, or look to excuse bad behaviour or blame others whilst scratching around for any negative story about the police. You couldn’t make this stuff up. As Victorian as it may seem, the sad truth is we need to build more prisons. Get the scum off the streets for longer and send a clear message that knives and guns and other serious crime won’t be tolerated. Perhaps then when the message sinks in we’ll start to see less flowers on pavements and less wasted young lives in prison.
The beatings will stop when morale improves. |

Why are people so convinced that harsher punishments would deter crime? There is little evidence that this is the case. The social consequences of all under 25s being stopped and search, as well as being a practical impossibility, would be horrendous and probably do more harm than good. It's a minefield of an area with no easy answers, but progress is surely made by tackling the root of the issue (ie. how a teenager ends up carrying a machete to begin with) as opposed to locking them up for longer once they get to that stage or indeed creating an entire generation of people with issues with the police and authority.

You wouldn't stop all under 25s, just those suspected of being up to no good - particularly groups in black hoodies and masks.
