Bad injuries ,especially cruciate ligament tear . He had that followed by further knee surgery which kept him out of the Liverpool squad for about 18 months . Never been the same since and that was in 2016/17 .He then had a series of hamstring problems at Southampton .
Both Villa and Spam signed him on the strength of his form pre 2016 in the hope he would show some of it . He hasn't .

I hope we don't make the same mistake .

Agree he's definitely passed it now, but his form at Southampton was impressive and that's why Villa bought him for c£25m.
In 2019/20 he scored 22 Prem goals - 3 years after his knee issues
