I was though talking about advertising and not the consumption of take away food, something that is rarely, if ever, to be found in my own home.

It certainly grew strongly in the pandemic, has not declined, is much bigger in cities, particularly in London, and is definitely unhealthier than preparing food at home.

That said it is still only a relatively small part of overall consumption at around £20 billion pa of the total food and drink market of £315 billion.

The calories and unhealthy ingredients make it highly significant to health.
Before the proliferation of American fast food outlets and other foreign restaurants, only a small percentage of the population was overweight. We now have by far the largest number of said outlets in Europe. That is no coincidence.

The advertising standards we have now clearly aren't working.

Everybody knows that and some remember when there were fewer gentrified areas in London. There were also less stabbings and drug dealers.
Communities coming together is an unlikely prospect.

Communities do though come together. Not everyone in the community perhaps but enough to make a difference. I have seen it myself and, in a very modest way, have helped by donating furniture and clothing. What are food banks generally other than community efforts?

Food banks are organised firms . . . Trussell Trust anyone

For those who consume it a lot that’s true but they aren’t typical. The obesity crisis we have is caused by a lot more than that. It’s primarily over eating relative to need that’s responsible. Far too much fatty red meat in our diet, alongside fried food, doesn’t help. There really is no such thing as an unhealthy ingredient. Almost everything can be tolerated. It all depends on dosage, the level you consume. Even arsenic can actually be good for you at trace quantifies whilst too much water can kill you. The thing to concentrate on is your diet. Not ingredients.

This is a specialist area of mine having spent most of my life in the food ingredient industry.

The biggest provider certainly but the majority are independent outlets often as a result of community efforts.

Oh, sure. Food banks are nothing but a big party. Who wouldn't want to go?
Communities don't come together when they're isolated and factionalised. We're dealing with "communities" who speak different languages and often have historical grievances with each other.

I think you will find that people eat less red meat than they used to. They have always eaten fried food.
Thanks for the science lesson, but this is one subject that I very likely know more about than you do.

The only thing that has changed in recent history is the availability of take away food and a reduction in energy expenditure.
One has to consider portion size and the larger amount of calories per serving that fast food contains relative to domestic meals. More people have sedentary lifestyles, which require less walking around and other physical effort.

A lot of the users of food banks do not need to but have nails to pay for

Doubtless true in some places, but not in others. Even in the most divided and fractured communities you find individuals and small groups trying to pull things together and help others.

No one is saying there aren't. Just that their chances of success are very small. Things are getting worse, not better.
