If memory serves.... the Moguls were pretty important dudes in that neck of the woods way back when. No time to delve into the history books at the moment but India was a pretty happening place in the Middle Ages.

Yes but not OUR system of law/government etc.

Commonwealth countries have a shared British culture. I just can't understand an argument against this.

Yes, the British influenced lots of countries in the Empire days and instilled government etc. However the cultures are quite clearly very different to each other! Benidorm has more in common with any UK town than Lahore!

I'm sorry but I just disagree. When Michael Palin did that round the world show there was loads of stuff on India - in some parts the architecture, traditions etc were so British!! I've never been there though - can anyone who has travelled there enlighten us?

In fact in our increasingly adonyne, technological and urban society in a bizarre way some parts of India could be said to be more traditionally British?!?

Anyway I've got s*** loads of work to do - back in a few hours...

This post has been merged from a topic called '2 minute silence at 12pm - don't forget!' by Moose

Only wish there was more we could do but sentiment has got to count for something.

Quote halfmanhalfslug at 14 Jul 2005 11:35am

What f*cking difference does it make if we have the same culture or not? Why not CELEBRATE these differences and make the most of being able to dabble in and enjoy others' culture, rather than condemn it and call for all traces of it to be expelled? If we were all the same as eachother - especially if that involved being involved in tired cliches about the specialness of Britain - then it'd be a boring country indeed.

But cultures are NOT mixing are they? That's the problem.

Your comments are as simplistic as any from the BNP. The reality is far more complicated. Multi-culturalism becomes a problem when communities don't mix, when they consider themselves separate and apart from the main society. No doubt you would pin the blame for this on racism etc. But part of the blame must lie with the communities themselves.
