I just discovered this thread and I thought it might be nice to resurrect it a few years on.

I think the original issue, that white racial remarks aren't really related to racism compared to different coloured racial intollerence, has actually blurred the definition of racism even further over the past few years.

Political correctness is the blame for this. If a black person turns around and said to me "you white w***er", I would be expected to take it in my stride and accept it. But if I retorted with "you black b******", then it's likely that the race card would be played.

In the end it's what people actually perceive that makes the difference. The police have to be looking to do something about 'racism' as they themselves are often criticised for being 'racist' as they stop and search more black people than white people.
This means that the police have had to become more selective in who they search.

Bit of a story to chuck in now:
All the way back in June 2002 we had a bit of a row with our neighbours, who we were actually friends with for about 13 years. To cut a long story short, the w***er next door shouted over the garden fence to my mum "shut up you stupid white bitch", but she, which I did consider stupid in this country these days, replied with "f*** off back to your own country, you black b******".

Anyway, that night when we were all asleep, someone decided it would be fun to set a fire on the doorstep next door (we know it was that conniving c*** next door). So what happened? Well late that afternoon we got a knock on the door from the police. Both myself and my mum were arrested on suspicion of racially aggrevated arson.

He'd told the police what my mum said the day before, and what I apparently shouted to him -
"All of you black w***ers are the same. Just f*** off."

So we were locked up in an interview room from 3 til midnight being interrogated. And it was an interrogation - not an interview. The police were outrightly accusing us of making racial comments and being racist, always returning to the question of what were we doing between midnight and 4AM of the morning of the fire.

So anyway, we were bailed for 3 months and finally received a caution for being racist. We were warned that if we made any racial comments within 3 years then the police would have to prosecute and it was likely we'd be given a custodial sentence.

The point is that we both stated what he called my mum and he didn't receive any warning, caution or anything.

Racism is perceived to be based upon skin colour and nothing else. Those of a non caucasion colour appear to have more rights over white people in terms of racial comments.

There is also a history of racial tollerence/intollerence. In my Grandparents young years there were very few people of foreign origin living in this country. When they did start moving over here they didn't treat them as a normal, white person as they were completely different. They were something new. Their perspective hardly changed until the day they died. It's how they were brought up and what they knew. People can't just change their opinions to suit society.
But today alot of their views would be perceived as racist.

If 'racism' cannot be treated on an equal basis, without preference and with bias, then surely it should not be a crime. Double standards and politically correctness have gone completely wrong. "Bar, bar black sheep" has apparently been banned in Primary schools - I don't know whether there is any substance in this but I believe it!

The whole idea of comments being racial come across as stupid to me. It may offend someone, but it is no different to calling another person fat or another stupid.

Racial hate is a different matter. If people throw bricks through windows and spray paint comments across houses, then that's a different matter. Something should be done as it is actually putting lives at risk.

It's really a never ending debate, but I believe the law needs to be changed to resolve it.

We are all ethnic but in a majority us white people don't see ourselves as that!!

Anyways the correct term used certainly in my line of work for the government is BME meaning Black and minority ethnic [groups]
