Asylum seekers actually have a far harder time of it here, and get far less benefits, than in most other European countries... and yet they still think it's a free ride here. Why would national service change that? Or do you just want to have an excuse to send them all to Iraq...?

I dont just want an excuse to send them to Iraq. To be honest I dont think that we or USA should be going to war with anyone untill they have proof that Iraq has weapons of Mass distruction. I have thought for a long time that a type of National Service would be a good idea. I know that it has it's faults (main one being that Asylum seekers are probably leaving their own country to avoid war) But I think that they should be made to do something to prove that they really want to be in this country.

I see your point, but I should have thought getting here was proof enough of their willingness to be here. No doubt this comment will annoy a lot of you! But it is actually very difficult, and expensive, for most asylum seekers to get to the UK.

Logic, that's a fair point you make about them working for their right to be here but as we all know, they are banned from working for 3 long years and all most all of the ones my mum works with (refugee council, brixton) are desperate to work, they are bored s***less and are highly, highly skilled. as slug says, it's actually the more affluent ones who can afford to leave and in turn they quite often have a higher level of training than some of us.

Whilst I don't disagree with this point, as I have no idea of the true economics of leaving one's own war torn country to escape to one of safe haven, I do however feel that once here we make it all too easy for them with big houses, all the benefits they need meaning they don't need to go to work even if they intended to once they got here.

On top of that, because they aren't working, they spend their time loitering around blocking the pavements along Oxford Street when I'm trying to get back to work after doing a bit of shopping

That's not just assylum seekers. That's bloody every tourist and shopper in Oxford Street. I work on Argyll Street (straight out of Oxford Circus tube) and they all get in my way all the bloody time.

I want a commuter lane introduced on Oxford Street for traffic! Get the slow ones walking in a separate lane!

currently they average (as long as they can prove they are seeking assylum as soon as they arrive at the airport else they get nowt, which means many will now be homeless if their language prevents them from understanding this rule) £30 a week to live on.
they then have to live with relatives (so at no expense to us) until their assylum is granted or not.
and then (if assylum has been granted) ones in croydon, for example, are being housed in run down b & b's (previously used for single mothers) and disused factories. nice. some lucky ones get to go and live in glasgow etc in very cheap accomodation. these are facts.

It's taken me half an hour to get throught this entire thread, I'm glad I did.

IMO this war on Iraq is about little more than oil and money. Why attack Iraq as a result of September 11? They didn't do it!! It seems to me that Bush needs to nuke someone and Hussain is next best to Bin Laden. What if Hussain hides in the Afghan mountains? Who will Bush and Blair spend their time plotting against then?

The American Government/media are as much terrorists as the Middle East dictators.

For all of you hold a tough line on Asylum seekers, I would invite you to walk passed Islington's Immigration office, as I do every morning, and speak with the people queing there. They're hardly the gun-weilding knuckle draggers you make them out to be.

I think Keith Murray said it best when he rapped

I'm sure you'll agree.

Iraq is a war on Terror (I know there's the oil issue too). IMHO if Saddam is given enough time, he will build up weapons of mass destruction. The weapons inspectors have a tough job covering an area the size of France to look for them. He's already killed his own people with chemical weapons and will start on Iran and Kuwait again and other neighbouring countries, followed by us if he is allowed to.

Anyway, Bush needs a war, it's always a votewinner for the next election

There are a lot of true asylum seekers - including many Iraqis who have fled from Saddam - who are given a bad name by the crooks who are highlighted in the media.

You may have to explain though...

Iraq -- it's not about terror, and it's not even really about oil. It's about Dubya finishing off what Daddy started, it's a matter of family pride.

Thousands of people are dying, and will die, because of this petty vendetta. That's all it is.
