Wilfried in Russia.......a bit of a worry .?!

I don't think Wilf would ever have established himself for England, the same as many other English flair players have been ignored over the years. If he had been playing for a big club he probably would have been given more of a chance, but I think he is more suited to the IC where he can express himself and receive the adulation he seems to need. It's a big shame as England have been boring to watch for about 20 years and he may actually have added some excitement to the proceedings. My love for Wilf has never wavered and I'm now more interested in watching Ivory Coast than England

there is also the case of look what happens when the IC play a competitive match against a 'real' team. try a full strength Russia/Belgium/Germany. See what their defenders do with him and his stepovers. As talented as he is, I can imagine a german right/left back putting him in the stands early doors, watching him get rattled and subsequently watching him get subbed.

Btw what's wrong with Wilf playing for the country of his birth? And yes I wish Wilf was playing for us but more than understand why he isn't.

Anyone who thinks Wilf "lacks passion" obviously has considerable posterior-humerus differentiation issues. And he'd have put away those chances Dele Alli fluffed against Germany the other night. I don't think clubs have any business stopping their players from competing at international level, although it is true that the timing of the African Cup of Nations isn't exactly helpful; but then that isn't the players' fault. A player like him clearly should be on the international stage. And how Wilf feels about being a) English and b) Ivorian is nobody's business.

While under ivory coast he is encouraged to express himself.

It's not 1991 anymore, and I'd say of any country Germany are probably one of the least likely to try and rough him up. Certainly no more than clubs in the Prem.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

Do you think he might have been able to unlock Iceland's? Him not playing for England has had consequences already. Too many players in the game in general are brainwashed into the pass-pass-pass possession style of modern team play, and still go sideways as a default regardless of who they're playing. Wilf is a leader in Europe for successful take-ons. He would be a blessing in the England team, but it's sooooo England to shun any type of flair.

He does this against Premier League quality full backs week-in, week-out in the Premier League, and is one of the leaders in Europe in successful take-ons (up there with Messi and Ronaldo). He'd do fine for an England team who lost to Iceland and struggled against Lithuania.

Very odd! Correct me if I'm wrong but he picked Townsend instead.. would have been so easy for him to have picked Wilf. Wonder if Wilf would have accepted. Maybe his mind was made up to play for his home country. Can't blame the lad for that.
