So you have made it sound like you also work outside in the cold at 6am in winter for hours at a time long-term doing physically hard and unpleasant work. If that is the case then both the dustmen and you deserve a pat on the back and in the former's case....more money.

It's subjective, the 'that I see' was a clue that it was, and I stand by it so not ludicrous at all. In your world maybe. But you don't live in mine so don't knee-jerk judge. Obviously if I were to to see the sewer cleaners of Mumbai every week then the dustmen would be usurped.

From the same advert earlier "Hours; Monday to Friday, 6.30am start until 'finish' each day (normally a 7.5 hour working day)" I make that around 37 hours.

Our old bin men, because we lived near a traffic light, wouldn't collect the bin if the lights were green. Its odd that I'm excited about the fact our bin men collect our rubbish, on a weekly basis, and are helpful. That's how far the 'outsourcing' of the bin services have got us. Used to be a hard work, that paid well (as I used to know a few 'tougher kids' who worked on the bins when I left school. Now it seems its not so much work, for f**k all money.

Dustmen was really the hardest thing you could think of, or do you have to see them? I would guess that it's an easier job in Devon than in a London borough too, less houses per round and therefore less bins. More time spent in the cart between the pickups too. You've never seen the people at the hospital that have to clean up bodily fluids? I think most people would rather move a bin from A to B than get hands on with a pile of vom, piss, s***, blood or a combination thereof.
