There is also some debate about the interpretation of the law and whether or not Stokes had completed the second run. If not England should have only been awarded 5 runs.
This sounds as though I’m trying to take away from England’s achievement which I’m not.

Very tough on NZ, whatever the interpretation.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

If true it makes a change for the luck to go the way of an England team.

Yes it was. Which makes their reaction to the result so admirable.

Yes, gracious in defeat. It's a shame when these mistakes are made.

I'm pleased the match was free to air though at least. It certainly won't harm the popularity of the sport.

It’s a shame the umpires couldn’t refer the decision to VAR. it’s not a situation they’re likely to have seen before.

It was a great game....and believe me, everyone that follows cricket down here is absolutely guttered, I know I am, grown man crying material, and yes there were factors that did not go our way, but what I can't work out, instead of a count back system, why not another super over if the scores were tied after the first, seems logical to me...(or count back the wickets taken ;-) )....but it is done and dusted now, well done to England.

The ICC could possibly use another metric to decide the outcome in these situations other than most boundaries hit; cumulative runs scored or wickets taken or a combination of factors but 50 over games aren’t usually a T20 style slog fest so this feels like a slightly arbitrary stat to use.

And without trying to be patronising well done to NZ - it was some achievement to get to the final and to get that close, well, no words. Glad McCallum was watching and not playing.

I agree, it's no way to win a world cup.

I'd probably have them do super overs until a winner emerged.

Hopefully they refine it.

I doubt it as what's the odds of it ever happening again

That’s the key point. With hindsight a draw and joint champions would have been better.
On another subject it was good to see pitches which offered the bowlers a chance. A tournament that long would be less interesting if every side were chasing huge scores.

Blimey. The BBC 10 o'clock news last night made the following day celebrations and reflections the lead story and it lasted about 10 minutes.
