i think, rudi...what irks me is there seems to be an entitlement to good free flowing attacking football. in my 35 years supporting the club i can count on 1 hand the amount of seasons weve played easy on the eye football and nearly all of those has come during promotion seasons where we been winning. and even then actually its not been amazing its just winning papers over the cracks of style of play a lot of the time. if we had massive investment in the squad that entitlement would be justified, but for people to aim there frustration at roy, who is just getting the job done with the tools available to him is frustrating. over the past months ive seen comments like, hope he dies, and hope he catches covid. what sort of scumbag says that about anybody? You missed the team of the 80s in the late 70s, it was so promising, but self imploded due to greed. Then, we had to endure years of dross, until Coppell found a solution.

Modern football in a nutshell. I think its because the 'product' can't possibly live up to the marketing hype, the cost, the over exposure and the whole empty media circus that goes with it. That's bound to cause angst and frustration. When you've paid a fiver to stand on a wet and windy terrace you don't expect Palace vs West Brom to be any good, and it doesn't really matter if it isn't. When you pay seven or eight times that amount and the players are on six figures a week your expectation changes, even though its still only the same thing you're watching.

I can't justify the cost of a season ticket: 1. Price: where I want to sit in the main stand my last season ticket was £600 plus, god knows what it is today. 2. My Availability: You never know when a game is to be played Saturday afternoon at 3pm I can organise my life around. Today it could be any time or any day of the week. 3. Entertainment. If I am going to pay that sort of money I expect to be entertained okay you will say I am not a true fan / mercenary / glory hunter etc. However sport is not just about winning entertainment is also part of it and football has marketed itself that way linking up with Sky and all the media hype around players. Football is no longer about Alf Tupper type characters. Perhaps if football fans voted with their feet the clubs would recognise that they don't have a god given right to our slavish devotion. I would never support another club I would just drift away from football like many do. My mate is a Millwall fan sits on the halfway line more of less and with his senior discount pays about £200 for his season ticket. He accepts that not every game will be great and for that price he is more tolerant of his club than I am of Palace. Don't get me wrong I love our club but if a man can't slag off his own wife.....

Another issue is social media. Once upon we may have come away from a Palace game cursing and swearing about what a load of rubbish you'd been served up and how the team should be ashamed of themselves and so on. You might have carried on the post mortem in the evening over a pint with mates, but, after a while, you'd run out of steam and put it behind you. Not now though. For days afterwards we are raking over the embers with others on various media platforms and working ourselves into a froth and frenzy. This often entails getting into arguments with fellow posters which engenders even more gnashing of the teeth. So instead of a gradual cooling down we keep the fires burning for days afterwards - at least until the next game, And then it starts all over again.

Roy deserves credit for the job he has done but he is 73 and cant go on forever. I know we have had injuries but the defensive solidness has now gone out of the window and we are sitting ducks for any team that press us. Whenever we play the bigger teams the white flag is raised from the start and we still lose. We desperately need younger players with more energy and im not sure Roy can attract these players at his age.

It started with post match phone in radio shows and is now approaching industrialised outrage - literally, there is a whole industry built on banging on about how the fans 'deserve' more. Over analysing, unrealistic expectations, and the impossibility of every providing value for money at the price all combine to distort what football should be.

Pandemic Of Apathy. Personally I found the Pandemic of Apathy episode a bit cringe / crass. Drawing parallels between a global pandemic and watching a mid to lower division Premier League team.

Randomly listened to this yesterday. It's an amusing 15mins and much like a comedic version of our match threads.

If Roy was going to go at the end of this week we should be expecting an announcement in the next 48 hours so that he gets a great send off from the fans in our last home match against Arsenal on Wednesday.
I'm so Palace I don't even know it |
