How much longer to we have to put up with the appalling House of Lords.

One in 10 Tory peers have given more than £100,000 to their party
27 members of House of Lords have donated almost £50m in total to Conservatives

Any idea that their lordships are wise independent people who serve us I can't imagine how, are as ridiculous as they are.

The ‘indefensibles’: donors, cronies and lackeys embody the case to abolish Lords.

Let's get rid of them.

Agreed. The problem is that Labour always makes noises about abolishing the HOL when they are in opposition but when in government they have done nothing about it so they are just as guilty as the Tories.

The whole process is corrupt, Labour promoted Shami Chakrabarti
to the Lords weeks after she had given the party a clean bill of health over the antisemitism row. A report that was widely discredited at the time and that was even before the EHRC report.

Then there is the odious Tom Watson who still has not apologised for his comments about various Tory politicians being involved in a pedophile ring based on the perjury of Carl Beecher. For some reason instead of distancing themselves from him Labour were desperate to promote him.

In short the HOL should be replaced by an elected chamber however it is too convenient for all parties to promote failures.

Are there any ex trade union leaders who have funded the Labour Party that have been ennobled?

You want us replaced by an elected chamber!, Tgat would be interesting, especially if some posters won’t except the result

The average age of members of the House of Lords is 71.

71.

Its worse than the HOL.

And why have politicians anyway, what superior knowledge do they possess, none whatsoever if our current state is anything to go by.

I wonder what the actual Hol average age actually is.

Or emotional.
The average age would be tricky to calculate - being a Palace fan would hasten the aging process by quite a factor.

Well, it used to be full of a wonderful cross section of Hereditary Peers who had a vested interest in this land and it's people and who understood the basic needs and reasons for the country being the way it was, with the temporal finely balanced with the spiritual to cover all society......... but that wasn't considered right as they were all 'privileged' so out they went to accommodate dodgy dealers, expense fiddlers and political failures, which has proven so much a better alternative.

The honourable member for Truro is Cherilyn Mackrory. Who is a lovely lady who I spent an hour with a few weeks back. What her view on this is I don’t know.

I would like to see it reformed but not elected.

Oversight of the political process is best done by non politicians so I would like a chamber of independents who formed groups according to their areas of expertise and moved between them.

There should be no political involvement in their appointment either but done by a standing commission who is appointed directly by the Monarch after advice from the Privy Council. Hereditary peers not involved at all.

Members to be those who have achieved a universally approved success in a variety of different areas. People who can be trusted to scrutinise objectively.
