The Gills had the better of the first period but failed to find the net. Player-manager Andy Hessenthaler went close on eight minutes and later had an effort blocked by Kit Symons.

Andy Johnson nearly scored for the visitors as his header from Shaun Derry's free-kick was saved by Jason Brown. Seconds later, Thomas Myhre blocked a header from Chris Hope down the other end.

Hope was sent off for a professional foul in the 54th minute when he brought down Dougie Freedman in the area.

Freedman dusted himself down and stepped up to take the spot-kick but it was saved by keeper Brown.

Johnson fired an acrobatic shot from close range which flew inches over the bar on 70 minutes. Ten minutes later, Brown tipped Symons' header over the bar.

Unfortunately it was Gillingham who found the net at the other end. On 83 minutes, David Perpetuini scored the winner for the home side from Mark Saunders' pass.
