Maybe you could help them?

Your right many do not know any better, as they have been spoon fed by the state. Without going over very old ground, they have no desire to improve themselves unless they have too. The benefit system needs a major revamp, that encourages people to improve themselves or their benefits are reduced or stopped.
They need incentives to change.

Wouldn't a better incentive be to increase their benefits in line with achieving goals associated with improvement.

Anyhow, the government could give a s**t about people bettering themselves and certainly even less of a s**t about making such things available to people.

They can keep their current benefits, if they try to improve themselves and make themselves more employable.

The government is there to govern, not hold people's hand. Whilst you give people something for nothing, that is what you get nothing in return.

You do realise that wouldn't work though, and that in truth, the problem of being employable is largely geographic for most people (and in fact most people who are unemployed can't afford to make themselves more employable).

Who decides who isn't 'pulling their weight' and who decides the criteria by which someone is not 'sufficiently improving themselves' and would you trust any British government of the last 40 years to not abuse this.

The government is there, to represent the people, not to rule them. Problem is the assumption that 'everyone who's on benefits' is employable, or can afford to work a job that leaves them worse off than being on benefits.

Precisely I am glad you agree, people are being paid to much in benefits. So there is no incentive to improve themselves and work for a living.
The old British values of supporting your family has been passed on to someone else to do.

Which people are they there to represent and not rule - although of course they do rule.

I'm not sure that supporting your family is a distinctly British Value. In fact I'd argue that most British 'values' are pretty much most people around the world's values

In which case why title this thread "so much for British values"?

Either you believe in them or you don't. Or did you mean "so much for world values"? :-/

It was a nod to the fact the Tories keep banging on about them You can't go into a school without seeing a display board with British Values on it.

So you don't believe their is such a thing as British values then?

And if so, in which case, our refusal to take in more (supposedly child) refugees cannot be a contravention or something that doesn't, in your eyes, exist.

Can't have it both ways.

I do believe that there is a perception of what British Values are. My point was that many, if not all of the values would resonate with people around the world. Or are you suggesting we possess particular values exclusively?

I love the way you attribute a thought to me, then go on to slag my position off based on your perception of what my position may or may not be. Good work.
