Something a bit more recent for you, Nick. I didn't hear anyone expressing outrage at this.

Yeah but you didn't post it.

Oddly, I'm torn, here, as I find that both events are completely unacceptable in a civilised society.

Ok, I guess the question then should be, why the f**k is Croydon / South London such a violent place (without recourse to using race / ethnicity).

Always has been jamie...my dad used to call it bandit country, and he to was born and bred in west norwood.

always a Norwood boy, where ever I live.

Of course I didn't. But then again, I don't make a habit of posting stuff to give vent to faux outrage, either.

Unless it's about Eggheads, of course.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Well in fairness, that's no faux outrage.

Is Britain generally more violent now than in the past?

My perception is that it is more violent than say 50 years ago but outside of the narrow view of a life time, what is the reality?
Can immigration be show to be a factor? Is it about population density? Is it about socioeconomic?
Is it about the enforcement of law and order?

We need facts.

I think we as a society, tend to find things to blame and ignore the actual problems, rather than actually spend the money and effort on resolving a systemic problem.

Its the 'gangs/racists/liberals/immigration' etc. I think it might be time to consider it might be Croydon.

All four of those are probably considerable factors. Environment probably plays a part

there are some very interesting studies on how social behaviour is informed by the individuals social environment - admittedly its more about abuse of power - but isn't violent crime with no financial motive about establishing power?

I'm going out on a limb here, and saying most of the area is pretty grim, run down and fairly dismal - Lots of boarded up shops, few options in terms of local businesses etc

There seems to be a lot more guns about in the hands of da yoof than there were when I was a teenager. The threat of violence always hung heavy in the air in Croydon at night, though. Not just Croydon, either - most town centres could get a bit frisky on a Sat'day night.

Aren't you banned by statute from getting a bit frisky on a Sat'day night?

Probably because most guns back in the day, would have been used by armed blaggers and the like (or terrorists). The routes by which guns would have made it to the UK meant that they also passed through a number of more interested hands before reaching the UK.

Illegal guns were probably more in demand by groups in Europe, the Provos, Loyalists etc as organised crime and the drug business were only really starting to pick up.

Guns are expensive, you really needed the drug trade and gangsters taking over the drug trade to see street gangs being able to afford guns.

There is something of an irony in the story. You have a young Kurdish man, claiming asylum from an intolerant violent state, being beaten s**tless in the streets of the country he was claiming asylum from.

A bit like the murder of that bloke, who survived 10 years in the Cambodian 'killing fields', as a dissident, getting murdered on the streets in the US.
