I don't want a rise in hate crimes to be true. But I think it would be foolish to completely dismiss a rise or that any occur. There have indeed been ethnically-motivated hate crimes here for decades,indeed well before the 50's (plenty of Jews earlier in the century getting beaten up randomly and told to go back home)... But there does seem to be a nasty spike at present and it would be hoped that would concern all... BBC 15 February 2017: "A majority of police forces in England and Wales saw record levels of hate crimes in the first full three months following the EU referendum, according to new analysis. More than 14,000 hate crimes were recorded between July and September. In 10 forces the number of suspected hate crimes increased by more than 50%, compared to the previous three months. Police say their own monitoring suggests incidents have levelled out after the summer's spike. Last October the Home Office published provisional figures which suggested the number of hate crimes in July 2016 had been 41% higher than 12 months earlier. Those 5,468 reports indicated there had been a spike in reports - supporting anecdotal evidence across the country of an increased number of threatening, violent or abusive incidents. 'No more Polish Vermin' cards distributed Family home targeted in racist fire attack Polish cultural hub emblazoned with graffiti The fresh data compiled by the Press Association comes from official statistics which include detailed figures for five core crimes which are deemed to be racially or religiously aggravated, ranging from assaults through to criminal damage. In the three months to September 2016, 33 of the 44 forces in England and Wales saw their highest levels of hate crimes since comparable records began in 2012." We do indeed live in a relatively tolerant multi-cultural society..but that is no reason to be complacent if the current spike continues....

Except there is reason to consider the two could be related, as it would certainly embolden people who held such views - who see it as a legitimisation of their view point (even though it isn't). People in society are informed by society. It would be churlish to immediately dismiss any evidence, and there is some, of a relationship between 'hate crimes' and decisions that have a strong nationalist bent. I don't want it to be true, but there will always be unintended consequences to the decision to leave the EU.

Many of these alleged incidents have not even been investigated, far less tried in a court of law, and therefore there is no hard proof of what happened or whether it happened. This is because these ‘crimes’ (the police and Home Office have given up on the word ‘allegations’) are simply things that have been told to the police, often through their phone or email hotlines. And then the police instantly – instantly – record them as hate crimes, with no need for questioning or investigation of any kind. Every single person who phones a hate-crime hotline is believed. So the statistics are basically a load of nonsense and ammunition for left wing agitators to paint post Brexit Britain as the rise of the Fourth Reich. Edited by hedgehog50 (05 Apr 2017 9.52am)

Rather than just assuming that something is the case, one way or the other, its usually better to find out what the situation actually is. Whilst it doesn't entail that a rise in reported cases is actually a rise in events occurring, it is more reliable as an indicator, as trying to use rhetoric to surmise that any such rise is a false positive, before moving on to shallow hyperbole to prove your point.

But can you demonstrate that, or is it just something you want to believe, because you're pro-Brexit. There definitely has been a rise in reports, and that's been reported quite widely. That has some weight, as one would expect more reported cases being recorded, as potentially indicative of a rise in events.

First it was all Brexiters are Racists, now it's Brexit has caused a rise in attacks on foreigners. If you want to view things with an intellectual eye, you have to do it without prejudice. The simple fact is that mass immigration causes friction. It always has and it always will. This is just the latest spin.
