I don't think you read what Wordup posted.

These statues were not put up by the Confederate forces. They were put up as anti-abolition, anti equal rights symbols much more recently. They are disgraceful in their intent. They ARE a symbol of white supremacy, that is why they were erected.

It's fairly obvious that you don't read any of my posts properly.

I'm not offended by the language at all. It's the language of where I am from. However, for a site not to descend into nothing but troglodytes swearing at each other it makes sense to censor swearing....not opinions, but swearing.

It maps to the law in line with obscenity.

Next they will be banning the singing of 'American Trilogy'.

Then it will be looking to ban books with opinions they don't like.

Then, mandatory 're-educational' programmes for opinions.....not to stop people hitting other people...but opinions.

And that, as I have already suggested, is the crux of the matter.

Where do you stop once you have started this s***?

No one is denying that the South doesn't have more than its fair share of bigoted, redneck half wits, but there is more to this story than just why people put up the statues. It's about the principles involved in decision making of this type and what that might lead to.

You ain't going to have your opinion taken seriously on here if you just call people c***s when you disagree with them.

I don't intend to divert from the thread either. I just wanted to answer that particular point.

The reality is that all statues will have supporters and detractors. It should be about the local opinion around it.

No you don’t need to be Irish or a Monarchist to take exception to a statue of Cromwell. The original point is that in local British context a statue of Cromwell has largely lost it ability either to inspire glorification of a brutish system or to act as a marker for who is in charge, over time these conflicts have been resolved.
I agree to an extent that the issue should be taken at a local level and the Charlottesville city council took the decision to the remove the statue , I assume if the majority want to keep the statue then at the next local election the people in Charlottesville will be able to have their say. Having said that, I would also expect guidance and leadership from higher levels to ensure that decisions fitted with a national mood.

Well, while it isn't for you to say what other people's extent of feeling is about historical figures ..... I certainly agreed with most of your post up until this sentence.

You don't allow people the say in what statues or monuments exist in their area and then write that. The south contained many armies and their relatives live within these towns. You don't get to decide how people feel about their past and frame it into simple good/bad ideologies because some people feel like that.

If the local area want these things they have them, if they don't, they don't....like you said first.....No higher up 'guidance'.

Also, if this area were to have to fit in and take 'the national mood' into account then the statue would have to be remade and put back because as the polling data shows the 'national mood' isn't with taking these statues down.

I hold with the view that it should be for local areas to get to decide.

Shall we tear down everything built a hundred years ago by people with views you didn't like.....at least we will be creating jobs in the construction industry.

Shall we ban Michael Jackson's music because you know....he had to pay off those boy's families.

Careful you don't laugh at a Crosby joke....we will need to re-educate you.

Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Aug 2017 8.02pm)

Come on Stirling. Very poor comparison. These statues were put up specifically to assert the right for white people to have power over black people.

The pyramids were built for rather different reasons.

Jackson did not write his music in a direct provocation in order to offend. If I find it offensive that is merely in the eye of the beholder. Not up to you usual standards, been a long week?

No one knows what the Pyramids were built for.

And all offence is in the eye of the beholder.
