No, that's your rather one eyed interpretation of it. What a statue might represent to you isn't what it would represent to someone else. Maybe what you say is true for some people but as I've said, countless times now. People have dead relatives in those armies and you don't get to tell them how to feel about it.

I left the part I had a problem with....I'm sure if people want a wider context they can scroll up a bit...but posts can get really long if we aren't more specific with what we want to address.

There is a bit of a conflict in what you say, in my view. You say allow local democracy to make a decision on it but then you say that if higher powers don't like the decisions taken by the local democracy that they can over-ride them.....Well....that's just having your cake and eating it too isn't it.

You either have local democracy or you don't.

If we follow your point and have 'higher up guidance' reflecting, 'national feelings' then you are agreeing then that this statue should be remade and put back then.

Because as the link I provided showed, the national majority mood is not to take down these statues.

I actually take the position that you tolerant local democracy if it is obeying the law....and keeping or not keeping the statue isn't a question of that....indeed the people who took matters in their own hands broke the law....apart from escalating the violence that's sure to come later.

And you were moaning about bad comparisons.

You don't deal with the flaws I've pointed out. You have no issues with the tearing down of the Lee statue but apparently you ignore the problems inherent with that which I've pointed out.....Not surprising. The pyramid point and slippery slope position pretty much wreck the arguments you made. I've noticed you doing that in another thread. If you were playing chess you'd resign but with online debate you can just ignore the problems with your argument when they are pointed out....oh well.

Germany would like you because they ban certain things as well, but even they have monuments to German generals such as Rommel....that's far closer to this situation than your swastikas.

There is a blue plaque in Tennison Road to commemorate Arthur Conan Doyle who made many unflattering references to people of colour in his books. He even featured the Klu Klux Klan in 'The Five Orange Pips'. Surely in this day and age, in the 21st century, in our vibrant and diverse cosmopolitan near-utopia, we should tear down this offensive blue plaque. To further this progressive aim, I intend to form a collective, "Palace Resistance in Countering Klan Support" (PRICKS). Please PM me, preferably with a small donation, to help with this.

Have you read 'the five orange pips' ? It's not exactly a glorification of the KKK. I think the blue plaque will remain safe for a long time.
