That is quite a big non sequitur!

That though isn't the point, is it? The purpose of any democratic system is to ensure that the power to change things lies in the hands of the people, and not either a king or select group.

Parliamentary democracy has evolved as electorates got bigger and direct democracy became ever more unmanageable, slow and expensive. It can work with small electorates and simple questions, but asking electorates to choose representatives to study complicated issues, and take decisions on their behalf, is not only more efficient, it helps ensure that the people, as a whole, get what they need, and not just what they want. Direct elections will always see self-interest winning and the needs of minorities ignored.

You argued that referendums are more democratic. They are certainly closer to democracy's Athenian origins, but democracy has moved a long way since then, and the meaning of the word has moved with it.

Does anywhere allow children to vote? Determining when childhood ends is another question. Should serving prisoners (and those convicted of election offences) be allowed to vote? I cannot imagine you being in favour. Should Peers or the Royals be allowed to vote?

Over 99% of all adults can vote. Isn't that actually more democratic?

The question on peers is interesting. How many are there? There are 810 in the House of Lords and only those eligible can’t vote.
At the UK General Election of 2017 there were 285,000 registered overseas voters. At the time Government estimated that this is about 20% of eligible expats under the current 15-year limit.

Houses are a product of economics....it hits the nail on the head. If everyone deserves a stake then where is my stake in your house.

No the reality is that only those who have a stake within something should have a say on it.

Therein lies the difference between those who regard self-interest as the only determinant in deciding behaviour, and those who see a need to think of the interests of us all.

Politics is far more than just the determination of economic policy. It concerns what we do as a people, and as a species. Just look what is happening in Glasgow! Political leaders trying to take actions that impact the very future of our planet.

Short-term self-interest is the easy and lazy route to personal gratification.

Life is much bigger, and more important, than that. We all have a stake in life. Ours, and those who follow us.

So everyone needs to be involved. Not just the economically active.

Maybe he should invite you round for a steak at his house, then you can tell him if it's cooked or rare enough........

with a glass or two thrown in, you two might actually become friends..
