I see Ayew doing it, I see McArthy and McArthur put massive shifts in. Can't say I've ever thought Benteke should come off because he looks tired though. Crap possibly, but not tired.

Completely agree. That's why Eddie Jones calls them the finishers. If you know you are only playing 30 minutes you can run around like a mad man, particularly beneficial when you have bigger/older players. Roy just runs our players into the ground, hence the injury crisis.

Or worse, defensive midfielders on for right backs and alike? Plus I hope our next era is worth this and the ownership issues. I would suggest a two week break, after a gruelling run of fixtures, had a lot to do with Saturdays performance, along with Newcastle being over run in midfield.

My one quibble would be that Benteke and Sakho did the business for us initially and helped us maintain our Premier League status. I suspect we were desperate and Liverpool knew that and so we paid over the odds. We need to avoid being seen as desperate in the coming windows. Difficult given the age profile of our squad but (if SP is to be believed) it does seem that financially at least we are better placed than we have been for some time. Talking of SP, I was intrigued at his mention of researching loan-type options that wouldn't damage us.

Surely only having a squad of 23 players, (20 of which are outfield), rather than 25 sums up our situation. Any other teams in the PL without a full first team squad? I tell you what I'll go and try and find out.

So my comments are clearly with the benefit of hindsight.

I tell you what I'll go and try and find out. I've just checked on FotMob and it shows us only having 22 senior players, 19 of which are outfield. I have listed these below, because the rest are just kids or new signings which are not going to be playing. It is difficult to work out if other teams have youngsters down in the first team squad as I don't know the players well enough, however what does make interesting reading is as follows: Our recognised senior players Guaita, Hennessey, Henderson Cahill, Dann, Sakho, Tomkins, Ward, Kelly, Van Aanholt, Schlupp, Riedewald, McArthur, McCarthy, Kouyate, Milivojevic, Townsend, Meyer, Benteke, Ayew, Tosun, Zaha That is 19 senior players of which Sakho, Schlupp, Kelly and Tomkins are currently injured. So we basically have just 15 outfield players to choose from. It is little wonder our players are knackered and susceptible to injury.

An the alternative argument demonstrating the strength in the squad we have got is that despite this small squad numbers and a crippling injury list for a sustained period we are 9 points above relegation and a similar distance off a Champions League place.
