Back in the say Match of the Day and the Big Match would only show a handful of games. This meant that when you went to a game you had to rely on your mind's eye to recall to replay the goals scored. I wonder how many of the 30 yard screamers I recalled were in reality as I remembered them. Some may have been deflected,flukes or attempted crosses. In a way its better to remember them fondly rather than have them shown up for what they were on the TV. Best performances from opposing individual players that I ever saw at Selhurst came from Bobby Moore and Dave Mckay.

A successful Div 1 player may have put enough by to start his own business (usually a pub) when he retired from the game.
No doubt the players are fitter these days but my god aren't they payed for it! The average PL player earning roughly 20X what the Prime Minister gets.

I recall those halcyon days.
I also recall the scenario where instead of using jumpers one used to avail of a goal on a park pitch and then hearing the bellowing voice of the park-keeper leaving one in NO doubt that one should expend energy elsewhere.

In the days of the Holmesdale Terrace perhaps those affected by the cascading of supporters downwards to "Knees up Mother Brown" were showered with Bovril and the like.

The biggest fights we used to have were when the goalie (three goals and out) thought the opposing player had hit the ball too hard when only about a yard out. There was always a long argument about who whose job it was to go a get the ball. Also intense debate about whether it would be rush or stick goalie.

For those of us of a certain age we will always have fond memories of the past and I am no different. I hate the diving, the cheating, VAR and the general dishonesty in the game at all levels especially within the clubs themselves. Football has no real moral compass anymore which is a shame. On the plus side watching skilful players is great particularly when they are being played on pitches which the likes of George Best (I saw him play live at Selhurst Park) would have thrived on. Facilities generally are better of course as well. In general though the negatives nowadays outweigh the positives for me and whilst I have put a deposit down on my Season Ticket for the 2021-2022 season I am not sure that I will take it up because it is just not as much fun anymore and that is the whole experience from leaving home to getting home again. Finally though - one thing that really struck me from last weekend - the minutes silence before the game where the players stood, heads bowed to remember those that died to them give them the freedom to kneel to support a career drug addict criminal in America. I know the kneel is about more than that but BLM is still a bad organization deep down albeit we all know that racism has to be kicked out of life. Sadly, football itself has helped to take the shine off with too much exposure and too much cost, but it is also just more difficult to feel loyalty or fanaticism for players who are now much younger than you by several decades and with who you often have nothing in common.

With Palace in particular, it is also the fact that we have failed to significantly develop out ground or win anything, apart for the ZDS Cup, in all the time I have been a fan, in my case,50 years or so.
