I lived in the US for a few years in the 80s. I was surprised then how small minded and unaware the population was. A friend was on holiday in the US and was pulled over by a policeman for a minor driving infraction. The next thing he was staring down the barrel of a gun, very frightening. Anyway once he started talking and the cop realised he was English the cop relaxed and put the gun away. He had a 10 minute friendly chat with the cop and he could not believe how stupid he was and ignorant about the rest of the world and UK in particular. As my mate said to me imagine one of the idiot security guards in a supermarket with a gun, scary or what.

How many people from the UK could name the leader of Austria or Australia for that matter without the help of Google

How many people in Britain could name the president of Portugal or how many houses there are in the Austrian parliament?

Possibly because Americans don't get as much holiday entitlement and travel abroad is difficult for them. If you live in Oklahoma and have to keep up with news from all over a country the size of the USA your interest in foreign affairs is likely to be less.

You are probably right about Londoners but I bet they know where Scotland is, even if the detail of what happens there is a mystery.
