What is the point of the new academy if it is not going to produce the goods.

Although playing in our development squad he didn't really come up through it as we acquired him as a 20 year old

Apparently Real Madrid have put in a 65M bid for him

Two aspects to the Academy. One - produce first team players for CPFC. Two - demonstrate that the Academy (being a Palace player) does lead to career progression.

As supporters we are keen on the first. Aspiring players and parents will possibly look more at the second. The England Manager is ex Palace. Recent major exports have been to Manchester United, and recent imports have been from Chelsea. Academy players need to see that the academy does lead to a playing career with Palace Academy Players wanted by other clubs and also the Palace First Team (at least yearly) Once this is demonstrated critical mass should be obtained. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Fulham are showing the way.

Also - (I would imagine) for the club it also has its place as a viable commercial entity, or at the very least to break even, whilst I have no idea what that number looks like, given that these days clubs can pay £10-15 Million for a bench warmer it probably wouldn't take many rough diamonds to be discovered & the accounts make sense.

There is a third aspect, and that is generating player sales. Chelsea excel at this, as you have mentioned.

The Academy now gives Palace the opportunity to compete for the best young players around instead of losing them to those clubs with a better infrastructure.

I think there is now real intent to fast track those players that have what it takes into the first team squad. However, ultimately it's down to the players themselves. If they are deemed good enough, then they will get their chance.

With the two U23 centre backs, O'Brien has a chance to further his development on loan at Swindon. JRB it seems has been identified as not being in his or Palace's long term interests to keep.

It don't like to say it but it is worth comparing our academy to Brighton, they have 4 or 5 players out on loan to championship clubs and some across european leagues, it brings in money in loan fees and gives them experience at a high level. It does make me laugh from time to time that they tell me Percy or Tau Billy Arce are ripping up the Belgian league and will be £50m forward as they slowly descends from sight but they are probably ahead of us at the U23 level. They have had their cat 1 academy for 10 years now while we have had it for one season.
Might just be an odd coincedence but what is interesting is with exception of Ben White most of the players who have made to the first team from their academy haven't really gone out on loan much Sanchez, Connolly and Alcate of the premier league home grown. ALthough Connolly is now out on loan but really hasn't done much since breaking into the team.

Seriously now, i think Ferguson is marked down as a CD and not a RB

He played mostly as a Central defender for WBA but has good ability at right back too.

After our victory over Chelsea today, we are above Br1-3ton in the U23 EPL2 table.

Good result today and I'm not knocking the academy, it is a work in progress and it is a huge step in the right direcetion attracting good young players. It is always great to be above Brighton especially living down here but their best young players
tend to be out on loan to championship clubs rather then in the U23 . Some clubs focus on good loan moves rather then u23s. We are above Chelsea aswell but according to Transfermarkt Gallagher and Broja are listed in the U23s , if you are a Chelsea fan you'd rather see them at Palace and Southampton then playing today.

Not sure loan spells always works well some players I have been assured by Brighton supporters are the next big thing such as Molumby,Matt Clarke, Viktor Gyrokes or Ostigard, have drifted from one loan move to another with out getting close to the first team while others have had brief loan spells and been promoted to the first team.
To be honest while we establish the academy I'd rather we concetrate on the U23s then loans

We will only know if he is a big loss in a few years time. If he ends up playing in the PL then the club made a mistake anything else and we did the right thing in letting him go.

As far I cannot remember hardly any players we let go went onto bigger and better things apart from Stan Collymore. Ian Wright and Kenny Samson forced their moves out of the club.

Any suggestions? Remember this is about the club not caring if a player left not a player forcing a move to a bigger club.

Edited by Badger11 (14 Jan 2022 3.50pm)

Recent years the young players who have left seem to have disappeared quite quickly.

In previous years Collymore is definitely the biggest error - £150k to Southend and then £2.5m to Forest 6 months later.

Surely Gareth Southgate must also be up there - played over 50 times for England.

But there are others.

Leon Mckenzie was with us for years and did well on loan to Peterboro and sold for peanuts. Had a good spell in the prem with Norwich and i think moved to Coventry for c£1m.

Chris Powell - left back who ended up playing for England

Simon Osborn - lost his way a little at Palace. Went to Reading for £90k - a year later moved for £1m and played in the prem for Wolves.

A number of strikers have left and done well e.g. Marcus Bent (£3m to Ipswich) and Steve Claridge etc. Maybe George Ndah, David Whyte, Jamie Moralee and Steve Kabba (until injuries) did well and even Akinbadbuy went for £2m after we gave him a free.

To a lesser extent Vincent and Cox both sold to Bournemouth for small fees, both enjoyed good careers and big moves afterwards
