There is a lot about the Ukraine situation that people believe that frankly is a lot of tosh.

I mean, if you asked most people, 'do you think the media tells you the honest truth', most of them would quite readily state that they consider the media quite low in honesty.

Yet, what I tend to find is that essentially most people still end up believing whatever angle is pushed at them....partly down to a lack of time or frankly interest. Also going against the socially accepted viewpoint is awkward to most.

The reality is that most lying is done by omission and half truth....cloaking language in such a fashion that it shapes the thought process.

Both the western and Russian media do it and most people aren't inclined to the skeptical because it isn't in their interest to be.

I'll put it this way on these figures - and not an exaggeration - if they were true, Russia would have lost. The figures you see would be roughly the size (more in some cases) than the entire British Armed Forces.

I wouldn't trust any figures put out.

We probably won't know the real truth until long after the war has ended.

While motivations exist to lie, that's what we will be fed. The only real truth is who occupies what ground.

It's a case of finding sources that try to be objective and only experience with them will tell you how important that is to them.

I'll put out this observation that someone I'm aware of wrote:

'As we speak there's a UK government department working with consultants on a strategy for controlling dissent this winter.

There will be a wall to wall media campaign of "blitz spirit" images of families and multiracial Britain wearing jumpers and socks for Ukraine, with the blame aimed at Vladolf Putler.

This message will then be disseminated through the population by media addicted busybody women looking for the latest do-good cause and fuel poverty marches will get zero media coverage.

This is how control of liberal democracies works now. You're all atomised individuals, capital owns media and the NPCs enforce the dominant narrative sufficiently.'

Agree with much of that, but the Russians are laughing at us, destroying our country from the inside out. The impact of this war and the reliance on Russia for gas and ultimately our electric ( as much of our electric is produced from gas), is slowly but surely going to bring down thousands of businesses as they move from borderline profitable to unprofitable. Our esteemed leaders however seem more inclined to keep it going than bringing it to an end.

I’m seriously thinking of selling up everything and moving country permanently.

The normal lad and lass are caught in the middle of a power struggle between competing world systems that perhaps have more interest in continuing that struggle than winning it....partly as its continuation gives them purpose and money.

It's the working people and vulnerable who are suffering and are going to suffer much more as this madness carries on. Heaped on top of the covid 'economic Karen' nuttery we are about as fecked as it gets.

My view is that America has always sought to drive a wedge between Germany and Russia as in combination Europe becomes a rival superpower.

I don't think it's an accident that Russia was fleeced when it opened up economically and still wasn't incorporated into a wider Europe in the nineties.

It's all a tragedy of what could have been and those elites going around pointing fingers at Russia are probably the type most at fault for it. Anyone who was around and taking note in the nineties knows that Putin was relatively pro western.

I think people need to understand that there is no cheap energy without Russian gas and all this scrambling around for another solution doesn't change that.

As you rightly observe this war should have been negotiated in March and the economic madness avoided. But the elites wanted their death struggle with Putin and ensured the media supported it by one eyed takes. So we are all going down this path together.

I fully understand why you would want to head off. This country has been sold out by traitors over a couple of generations now and unfortunately the future here won't be brighter.

What you see in London now will be most of the country within another generation....only the wealthy gated bits will be worth living in by anybody expecting a decent existence.

What a fine man Mikhail Gorbachev was with his contribution to ending the cold war and progress in his country.

Now its full circle in Russia and Putin is snubbing his funeral.

Compared to Gorbachev he is not worth a w**k.

Agreed. Though some on here still think Putin is some sort of hero to be looked up to.

Just saw today, there's a Russian naval squadron off of Ireland. Putin has new deals with Brazil and Hungary. Russia carrying out exercises with Chinese troops in Russia.
When the f*** will the West wake up? This feels like a sell out by our leadership.
We can't recruit anyone to the RAF unless a diverse female. Just about sums it up. Over before it even began, springs to mind.
Oh well, surely Biden to the rescue.

Ending the cold war I agree, but what progress?

Russia was fleeced and the whole reason you have Putin is because of that.

Whatever you think of Putin, once he got in their standard of living rose considerably....that's factual.

I would massively build up the military and I wouldn't have Russian ships doing whatever they liked off our coast. I wouldn't fight in Ukraine but we have to realise that one day Russia and/or China are going to do something and we will have to fight. Frankly, if I thought we'd ever be ready I'd say yes. My thoughts have always been it's going to be one day when China basically overruns the West. If Russia is their ally, then they would have to be dealt with at some stage. Shame we're so pathetic.

I agree that we should build up our military significantly as should Nato. As usual the idiots have been doing the very opposite for decades and sneering countries like Germany outsourced their defence to the US.

However, where I differ is that we should take a combative approach to Russia. This isn't communism looking to take over. This is a new cold war that has been manufactured which never needed to happen.

We need to negotiate with Russia as part of Nato (yes, that should have always have been from a position of military strength even though it can't be now) not be involved in a absurd unnecessary death struggle with them.

I've said from the beginning that this war (once you look at it) isn't one we are likely to win. Russia hold most of the advantages.....it shouldn't be the hill we die on and should have been negotiated.

But we have low quality elites who have put us into this position, just as they did with covid.
